The Athletic: Spurs keeps wasting opportunities to put pressure on clubs in the top-four race

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur remains in the fight for a top-four spot for UEFA Champions League football next season; however, their path to finishing in the top four is more complicated than it has needed to be over the last couple of months.

Spurs have either dropped points against clubs like against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley or taking advantage of a Manchester United team who had got one point in their last two fixtures.

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare states that these missed opportunities are a microcosm summing up their season to remain in the race.

“This is not a great Manchester United team. They are flawed and vulnerable, and with an interim head coach in charge are clearly in a period of transition. Spurs have such an opportunity to finish above them this season and strike at a moment when United are punching so substantially below their financial and historical weight,” Eccleshare wrote.

“They will surely not be like this for much longer. Spurs could still finish above them this season — they are five points behind with two games in hand after all — but Antonio Conte also has Arsenal to worry about, and his side can’t keep wasting these opportunities to put the pressure on.”

Spurs still have two games in hand in an attempt to secure all six points push themselves further into the fight. Clinching UEFA Champions League football for next season would go a long way in helping speed up this project and show Harry Kane they’re heading in the right direction with Conte.

Nonetheless, they can’t afford to continue dropping points to keep up with Manchester United, West Ham United, and Arsenal.

We missed our chance 3 seasons ago to invest in the squad… long road back now…& crucially will cost a lot more… levy will be gutted.. Kanes value has dropped by 40- 50% too…

Give over Charlie it was gone after the Wolves game, You dont get top4 by losing 2 home games in a row against teams below you.
Burnley was an aberration but by then it had already gone.
What is the magic finishing position we need to avoid is it still 7th?

We are what we are a mid-table outfit with two quality strikers one of which is having to double up as a creative midfielder. I am not yet sold on Kulu either. Slow as a carthorse and appears very one footed. Gets the ball out wide and always looks to come inside on his left foot. Quick question would Aurier under Conte have been our best RWB solution?

Going to need 10 wins at least to get 4th.
Though if we get 70 points this season is it actually a success?

Let’s be crystal clear. We aren’t nor we’re we ever candidates for a top 4 finish.

Only the deluded would let you believe otherwise

We are only one of a number of clubs who have flirted with the notion of moving into the top four. The arse,Utd.Spammers, ourselves and to a slightly lesser extent Wolves, have all looked at some stage capable of locking onto that no.4 slot. But every one has failed to put a decent run of results together to make that spot their own.

Sadly it looks like the arse are in pole position having got there last weekend and with a number of games in hand over all of us.I can’t wait for the crowing to commence.

Tottenham Stadium the only place in London where you can watch the Europa Conference League,If we manage to qualify.A £1B stadium with a championship team, you couldn’t make it up.
