Bruno Fernandes has now opened up on what James Maddison said to him after his red card against Tottenham.
The North London club took an early lead in the game against Manchester United as Brennan Johnson slotted one home from inside the six-yard box in the third minute of the game. While Spurs failed to double their lead in the first half despite dominating the proceedings, they did manage to frustrate the home team.
It resulted in a reaction from their skipper Bruno Fernandes who fouled James Maddison while Spurs were trying to hit them on the break. Referee Chris Kavanagh judged it to be serious foul play and he ended up showing a straight red to the United skipper in the 42nd minute of the game.
Fernandes was left frustrated by the judgement and he did speak to the media after the end of the game and made his thoughts known. He revealed what the Spurs attacking midfielder said to him after he was sent off.
The Portuguese international said via the Mirror: “Apart from slipping going in, I don’t take him as everyone wants to see it.
“I don’t go with the studs, I take him with my ankle. It’s a clear foul but never a red card. That’s my feeling. Even Maddison, when he gets up, you can see in the image… he just said, ‘It’s a foul but it’s never a red card’. That’s what he said.”
The Portuguese superstar made it clear that he didn’t go in with his studs showing and it was his ankle that had caught Maddison. While he did agree that it was a foul, the 30-year-old was not ready to accept that it deserved a straight red.
If he is to be believed, Maddison was also of the same opinion. Despite being at the receiving end of the foul, the English international said to him that he didn’t deserve a sending-off for the challenge. After the Manchester United skipper went down the tunnel, the Red Devils failed to recover. They conceded twice in the second half and ended up losing 3-0 to their top-four rivals.
