Tottenham Hotspur completed the capture of Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall during the January transfer window.
The Premier League club beat Barcelona to the signature of the 18-year-old midfielder and Djurgarden sports coordinator, Peter Kisfaludy has now revealed the reason why the player snubbed the opportunity to join the Spanish club and moved to Tottenham.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently claimed that Tottenham offered more money than the Spanish club but Kisfaludy believes that the comments from the Barcelona chief were untrue.
Kisfaludy, who coached Bergvall throughout his youth years, stated that the player always liked Tottenham and he had a dream of playing in the Premier League. In addition to that, a positive chat with Ange Postecoglou convinced him to join the club. Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski also played a big part in convincing the midfielder to join the club. South Korean international Son Heung-min also texted the midfielder welcoming into the club.
“Laporta saying that Tottenham were offering more money and that’s why he picked Tottenham, that’s not true. It was the feeling,” he said to Football London. “I know that Lucas has always dreamed about playing in the Premier League. I know that [was still the case] because I spoke to him before he went to London and he said ‘Peter, you know my dream is to play in the Premier League’ and his dream is coming true.”
It seems that it was a combination of factors that swayed things in the favour of Tottenham. The North London club will be delighted to have secured his services. The 18-year-old is a long-term prospect and he could develop into a key player for the Premier League side in the coming seasons.
Apart from their financial limitations, Barcelona are lacking in direction right now. Xavi Hernandez is set to leave the club at the end of the season and it is still unclear as to who will replace him. In comparison, there is more stability at Tottenham and Postecoglou has introduced an exciting style of football at the North London club.
It is no surprise that the young player has chosen to join them instead.
