Tottenham Hotspur are having to deal with a number of injury problems right now and journalist Paul Brown has now opened up on the possibility of the likes of Eric Dier and Ben Davies starting for the team.
Both players have struggled for game time this season and they are clearly not first-choice options for Ange Postecoglou. However, Micky van de Ven has been sidelined with an injury and it is highly likely that Eric Dier will now replace him in the starting lineup.
Meanwhile, Cristian Romero is expected to partner the England international at the heart of the defence when he returns from suspension.
Paul Brown has now revealed to Give Me Sport that Tottenham cannot be considered as title challengers, especially because of the lack of quality and depth in the side. He feels that the likes of Dier and Davies are not good enough to start for a side hoping to challenge for the league title.
“I don’t genuinely think that Tottenham are title contenders at the moment and certainly if Eric Dier and Ben Davies were having to play as the two centre-backs for any length of time, I think that would be a problem. Neither of those two clearly are first choice for the manager for obvious reasons, and I don’t think you’ll see them together at the heart of defence too often. Romero will be coming back after his ban. I’m pretty sure he will slot in alongside Dier. He had the option of playing the kid Ashley Phillips as well.”
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can sustain their impressive start to the campaign despite their injury problems. It is no secret that they need to add more depth to the side and signing another central defender in January could prove to be a wise decision.
In the absence of van de Ven, the likes of Romero will have to be careful. The Argentine international has been sent off a few times because of his aggressive defending and Tottenham will hope that he can curb his aggression and avoid suspensions in the near future.
