Spurs warned they’ll be making a ‘mistake’ if they sell first-team star to European giants now

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and Jose Enrique believes selling him would be a mistake.

Spurs have had quite a happening transfer window thus far. They’ve signed seven new players, but it appears that outgoings are now the priority. Hojbjerg could be one of the players allowed to leave.

Casemiro’s transfer to Manchester United was confirmed by Real Madrid yesterday. The Brazilian is set to join the red half of Manchester very soon, and he’ll be an excellent addition to their squad.

According to reports, the Champions League champions will go shopping for a replacement, and Spurs midfielder is reportedly a player Carlo Ancelotti would like to bring in.

Tottenham are reportedly willing to sell Hojbjerg, who joined Spurs from Southampton two years ago for £15 million.

A move could be on the cards, with Real Madrid reportedly interested, but Enrique believes selling him would be a huge mistake.

The Spaniard tweeted:

“ I really like him as a player to be honest it will be the perfect replacement at Real Madrid for Casemiro but I don’t think Tottenham is going to sell him it will be a mistake in my opinion.”

Since joining Tottenham in 2020, he has mostly been excellent, and he has started the season well as well. However, if a good offer comes in the next few days, Spurs may be able to cash in on him.

Hojbjerg is not even in the top 10 DMs in the league, we have 2 in Bents and Biss who are better. He is 100% every game, and just because Man Utd don’t have anyone like this, it does not mean he is irreplaceable. Players like Hojbjerg are not hard to find, players like Dembele are a different matter all together.

Your top teams have their CB or FBs as the players who get the most touches. Our problem isn’t the midfield, it is the lack of footballers at the back. These are the guys who initiate attacks and have to beat the press. I trust Romero, no one else.

Hard to tell with the lack of movement in front of them ..and the accuracy of passing..this has been going on for years though ..with different personnel..needs ironing out.

It is the squad that counts , Peh is almost untouchable within the squad .
We know his strengths , I think he lives ,he breathes SPURS , every squad must have at least one of these types .
It would be madness to let go a player who can just step in and produce [ similar to Henderson] and is influential . Sure there are more innovative , creative players but none as resilient and I gotta be honest I feel he represents ME on that field – Please stay Pierre , you would be so badly missed

There isn’t much difference between Jose and Antonio because crucial areas of the park remain weak spots , the other issues are covered by Ordinary Joe..all in all we just aren’t that good , poor distribution poor on the ball poor movement ..more Mourinho is what we are going to get because it works with the current squad ..still have very little pace upfront though hopefully Charlie will help with that .

Won’t happen ..we will sell and buy a punt from another league ..PEH is one of those players we won’t miss until he has gone..let’s face it Skipp is the most horizontal player on our books..and we gave him a new 5 year deal while he was in the treatment table.

Great post mate. Agree with a lot of that. Feel Bent and PEH are too similar though.

One of my favourite players (a sort of anti Dier – you take my legs and I will stand on your ankle accidentally of course).
And yet if it pushes through a couple of top AMs I would sell.

I understand that many fans want to see more possession, more ball control through the middle, and more opportunities created with that ball control.

That said, signing Maddison or some other attacking-minded CAM is not a magic button.

Even with that player, it would take this current Spurs squad a minimum of a full season to learn to play around him.

This squad knows how to counter, but they SUCK off the ball when in possession. They just do. Almost to every man they suck at it. Possession to control is just not what they do. This squad does not know how or where to move off the ball when in possession.

That doesn’t come quickly. Spurs cannot just change the shape and personnel and thus magically change their m.o. They are a countering squad, built for it. This squad has stunk in possession since before Pochettino. Their possession was sometimes above 50% only because they were so skilled with the press.

I am sorry if that hurts to realise, but it is true. This basic squad is not built for a game of ball control. Sure, Kane can drop in, Kane can hold the ball, Kane can feed the couple of marauding runners who are actually sharp enough to read the transition. That’s not a possession game.

I personally believe a world class central defender is a bigger priority at the moment than a creative mid, but I am not completely against buying a CAM.

I just believe that doing so will change very little about the way Spurs are built to play, and I believe Conte knows this. Changing to any sort of possession game in the front and middle takes a lot of time, and a certain mindset and skillset in the personnel.

It’s not a video game. Changing an m.o. requires changing several players, some of the training staff, and a huge commitment to that style of play, along with patience during the transition into it. It is not about one magic player.

All of that said, selling PEH is actually selling one of the few Spurs players who knows and understands a possession game. Sure, he is a DM, but he is one of the only players out there linking constantly off of the ball.

Spurs do not struggle against strong midfields because of PEH – or Bentancur, for that matter. Spurs struggle in that situation due to the poor movement from players off of the ball surrounding PEH and Bent.

A good attacking mid could offer one great option for them, sure, but past that … Spurs do not know how to play off of the ball. That’s not their game.

Yes I do.
I would give my left arm to win the PL (sick of going to so many open top Balance Sheet parades). So a few dozen “1-0 to the Tottenham” would suit me.
My reservation atm is that I feel we are in Statue territory – top of the league but not playing well.
We will see.

I would sell him in an instant should we receive a bid north of £40 million We could up grade then with a good AM as we have enough DMs on the books. I am starting to think that there isn’t much difference between Conte and Mourinho’s style of football and overall tactics. The first half was dire today and although we improved second half, it was turgid stuff overall. We are so slow to move the ball, particularly in midfield and we are very predictable. This of course raises the perennial question as to whether winning is the only metric or whether wining in style is the only thing that matters. I’m in the Danny Blanchflower camp when it comes to playing football, – “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom,” but I suspect many fans want to win at all cost after 23 years of Levyballs.

If there is any truth in this & your PEH.. why would you want to remain at Spurs? If a bid of 40 mill is made…& your Levy it would be nigh on impossible to turn down

What did Conte just say again? “I repeat, no one leaves unless we sign a replacement.”

Who are we replacing PEH with? Trash, lazy journalism.

Sell, sell, sell. We can easily upgrade with a more creative ball player type midfielder given we have 3 other defensive midfielders in the squad.

I don’t see how PEH will remotely be able to replace Casemiro in Madrid but what do I know. Definitely cash in on him if 45mil comes along though. We can use the cash to land Milenkovic Savic, an upgrade.

Consistent as a work horse but can’t see him as a regular starter for Real…
