Tottenham confirmed yesterday that Jan Vertonghen and Michel Vorm had signed contract extensions to see out the rest of the season with the club.
Both players had been due to leave on June 30 when their previous contracts expired and there was some uncertainty, at least in the case of Vertonghen, whether this agreement would be reached as any injury sustained over the Premier League run-in could jeopardise the 33-year-old’s chances of getting a decent offer in the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Ryan Fraser has declined a short-term extension at relegation-threatened Bournemouth for exactly that reason. But Vertonghen is the ultimate professional and showed his commitment to the group and his team-mates by making himself available to Jose Mourinho if needed.
These Spurs fans on Twitter were full of praise for Vertonghen’s selflessness and called on the club to give him a “proper send-off” when the time comes.
And Vorm too, I guess.
At a time when the majority in Jan’s position are refusing to extend this speaks volumes about the guy. Hope he gets a proper send off one day when we’re all allowed back

Even if he leaves on a free, he’s respected his contract and always given 100% for the club. Can’t ask for more than that as a fan.
Puts some other (unnamed Danish) players to shame!
I am pleased about this.

I know JV isn’t the player he once was, but he is proper Spurs, and even if he isn’t a starter every game, what a squad player to have.
Love JV, proper Spurs! 💙

I heard Roberto Martinez say that Jan was one of the Belgian players doing his coaching badges and this level of professionalism speaks well of him and bodes well for him if he follows a career in coaching.
