Some Details Of Fonseca Contract Offer Emerge

By The Boy -
link

According to Fabrizio Romano, a two-year deal is waiting for Paulo Fonseca and an option of a third-year at Spur is there should things progress favourably. It is my understanding from a source close to the club that Tottenham’s offer wouldn’t be for all candidates and reflects the financial battering that the club took during the dismissal of José Mourinho.

I also understand that this is a toe in the water type of deal as far as the club are concerned and weighted – not unfairly – but in ENIC’s favour for the incoming coach to live up to expectations. Additionally, the budgets for transfer activity are crystal clear. Sell to buy and with the direction coming from Fabio Paratici who will pass everything across Daniel Levy’s desk for approval.

I take a view that Fonseca will bite Daniel’s hand off to sign this deal and is likely to arrive in London with a wheelbarrow of fresh ideas good intentions. The Portuguese has had a result landing this role, but boy will he have his work cut out for himself…

His first task is to get a tune out of our existing superstars.

I don’t blame him for taking the job, and as HH says, he’s got his work cut out so for me he initially gets cut some slack in the biggest job he’s ever had.

This by no means endorses the situation that has led to his appointment, that’s Levy’s incompetence and lack of ambition.

It appears Levy ran out of ideas or realised potential suitors would not entertain working with him. IF we have gone down the unemployed list of managers until one says yes, it’s not exactly encouraging.
For me , I would have gone for Potter, he may not be a name or character that excites many, but I have liked his positive and forward thinking style, which if he can reproduce here would be great to watch and infinitely better than the complete negativity we have suffered in recent months.
He could also influence players like White, Bissuoma and Lamptey to come here.

I have no faith at all in anything Levy conjures up. If PF somehow turns out to not be complete camel doodoo then it’s by luck, not by some ability of Levy to spot talent. I know the stadium is an albatross but if you give the fans something to believe in, a product worth supporting, the money will flood in. This just feels like yet another supermarket sweep around Poundland.

Unless morale and unity can be measured in financial terms and recorded on a profit and loss spreadsheet, Levy won’t understand these abstract concepts.

We have been that club for a very long time, and I wouldn’t say something we’ve just recently evolved into, it’s happened over decades. If the owners think changing the style too attractive place and not winning trophies is going to be enough after everything we’ve been promised with the new stadium, then I think they’re going to be very disappointed with the fans reaction.

There is one insuperable problem at Spurs and that is Daniel Levy. We can speculate to our heart’s content as much as we like as to managerial appointments but it doesn’t matter, no manager will succeed at Spurs whilst Levy is there. It doesn’t matter who the DoF, head of player recruitment or who sits on the board, it is completely irrelevant. Twenty two years of failure should be enough for any Spurs fan to understand that we will never be a successful football club whilst Gollum is in charge.

If you’re winning then it doesn’t really matter about the style of play, although we all love teams that win and play attractively. We as Spurs fans have always had to make do with some nice play instead of trophies for many years and to be fair it is always been part of the clubs identity. It can excuse a lot of shortcomings. If you’re going to win playing in a pragmatic fashion then winning becomes the only metric on which the team is judged.

I expect that changing style of play may bring a short-term sense of positivity, but we are still stuck in the same endless cycle under these owners.

My main concern is Harry Kane’s departure, if we are behind the rest now what I think is going to be like after he’s gone? 🤔

Talking about winning against the bigger clubs; do you all remember AVB’s dreadful record against other clubs in the so called Big Six in season 2013-14? (actually, we probably weren’t a part of any Big Six at the time). I think we actually had (certainly at an advanced stage of the season at any rate) the worst record of anyone against the Five, rivalled only by Fulham!

“Okay Daniel, we want to sell Dier, Winks, Sissoko, Aurier and Dele to generate about 80-90M. Apparently, we have to sell Kane for 100M to City too. So let’s reinvest that in a few quality players – a CB, a striker, a goalscoring midfielder and a CDM, preferably ones that know the league.”

“Yeah, I’m not selling those players for less than 50M each.”

“…”

No, I don’t think he’s an idiot and complete no hoper and he may even surprise us but, as you say, his last bit of work wasn’t very impressive and this is a very difficult job trying to balance the expectations of fans, who believe Spurs is a big club (which, of course, it should be), with the actual current debt ridden reality and its cheeseparing way of doing things.

If Fonseca is appointed then I will support him wholeheartedly, but he has a task that Sisyphus wouldn’t envy, getting rid of the deadwood and a tune out of the rest whilst working under Scrooge McLevy’s budgetary requirements.

Let’s all hope it pays off spectacularly and we can start giving some back to all those FB and Twitter A*seholes who’ve had a good laugh for too long at our expense.

Dressing room atmosphere is so important that you have to waste no time in getting shot of any troublemakers (unless they’re an exceptional talent) and, sometimes, that means letting them go comparatively cheaply. This something the bald one doesn’t appreciate.

Like most, I hope to be proved wrong and hope he succeeds.

However, I can’t help thinking that come late October / early November, 99% of Spurs fans are singing “We told you so!” at Levy as we are 12th, having lost all games against any “big” teams we’ve played, rumours of aggro between Paratici and Levy in the press, Dier, Doherty, Winks still regularly involved, Kane on 12 – 15 goals already at City and Spurs a meme-fest on Twitter.

Richard David Bernard Taylor

I think a principal problem we have at Spurs is the amount of deadwood we’re carrying at the club, particularly those who are poisoning the atmosphere. These players need to be shifted out pronto, but they tend to hang around, often for years, while our supremo tries to squeeze every penny from a sale, up to and beyond any realistic valuation. Of course, when we are buying, we try to keep the price down and sometimes make an offer that is both derisory and insulting ie Jack Grealish! And no-one likes doing or wants to do business with baldy; he’s universally loathed..

Well he’s only estimated as the 6th choice.
The football Roma played was pretty okay in general, just winning against the bigger teams would be a worry.
Some of this I feel does come down to the fan base complaints about the playing style under Mouriniho especially the complaints the first half of the season when we were winning.
Have we evolved into a club that is more about entertainment rather than winning?

What is the point of a director of football, because this sounds like he is just Levy’s teaboy (or any gender he identifies with) and may as well be director of paperclips.
You recruit people to do their jobs. If Levy wanted a secretary employ one, you want a director of football let them do that and set a relevant review process.
Paratici is just a patsy for recruitment under this working set up because recruitment under this working practise ultimately comes under Levy.
Well, i think Paratici has a good chance of some well paid gardening leave.

This managerial pursuit has been the great leveller for Spurs and we are getting the manager we deserve. No elite manager was ever going to touch us with a barge poll while your Potters and Rodgers prefer to stay in the confines of smaller but well run clubs focused purely on football. The guy has won things so he’s not an idiot but his last job with Roma was a disaster. It’s a very risky appointment for Levy as he enters the last chance saloon.

Marbella Spur
Marbella Spur

So we have the best stadium and training facilities in the world and the answer to our woes is a coach with a good track record in the Ukraine who has just been sacked by Roma to be replaced by a multiple winner sacked by us to save money. Forgive me for being completely underwhelmed by this appointment. It reeks of giving somebody a sticking plater for a broken leg. Paratici has a good track record in Italy but it can’t be that difficult to recruit players for Juve like de Ligt for €75 mill but we are going to be scrambling around the bargain basement for our recruits after we have shifted the deadwood at some cost to our balance sheet. This appointment smacks of ill thought out desperation and is not the proper plan of root and branch reform of the way the club has been run that should have been put in place by the board. Levy will slink into the shadows pretending that Paratici is running football matters which we all know is a complete fallacy. It staggers me that Lewis is not more awake to the damage his diminutive sidekick is doing but then he doesn’t care about the football club’s success either. It makes me weep alongside so many long suffering fans. There is no end to this analogy with Sisyphus, it just keeps getting worse.

Totally agree. I will give him a chance. But I have absolutely no hope that this will be anything other than a disaster that will set the club back even further. I think with a top coach and a bit of spend we are 3 to 5 years away from top 4. If Fonseca lasts a year and is then sacked then that is a year wasted plus set back a further 2 or 3 years. I reckon we are now probably 8 years away from top 4, best case scenario. We are absolutely screwed.

Yep agree. Paulo has done nothing wrong and should be given a chance now he is there. The fact he was enjoying his summer without work and then a “Super” club with “the best facilities in the world” slid a contract under his nose is Levy’s issue.

Levy needs to go and Lewis needs to put his hands in his pocket and pay off the stadium to stop crippling the team.
