Sky Sports pundit claims Manchester City were targeting 24-year-old Tottenham man as weak link

By Mehdi Gokal -

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richard says that Manchester City were deliberately targeting Tottenham defender Emerson Royal.

Spurs fought hard to secure a point against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday in a six-goal thriller.

Heung-min Son fired Spurs ahead in the 6th minute, capitalising on a swift counter-attack. However, a few minutes later, Son inadvertently found his own net from a Manchester City free-kick, leveling the score at 1-1.

Foden then gave the home side the lead as City dominate the first half. But Tottenham weathered the storm, absorbing all the pressure before eventually finding their way back into the game in the second half.

Giovani Lo Celso scored a beauty from outside the box to draw Spurs level again. This was his second goal in as many games.

But City got themselves in front once again through Jack Grealish and just when it looked like it is going to finish in another defeat, Dejan Kulusevski rose to head home an equaliser in the 90th minute.

Speaking on the The Rest Is Football podcast, the former City man was full of praise for Spurs but did point out the weak link in the centre-half pairing.

Richards said:

“It was always going to be difficult with Emerson Royal playing as a centre half along with Davies.

“I thought Davies did really well on the ball but when you looked and saw the analysis, Man City was actually letting Emerson have the ball and then as soon as he got the ball they would pounce at it.

“On another day it could have been six or seven for Man City but what I liked about Spurs is that they kept playing and doing the things that they are good at.

“After the results they had against Villa and Chelsea you are thinking, can you buy into what the manager is telling us? Is it going to work?

“But they stuck at the task and it paid dividends at the end, that’s what I liked the most about Spurs’s performance.”

TBH Says:

It was a performance to be proud of from the Tottenham players. Despite missing a number of key players from injury and suspension, the depleted Spurs side fought valiantly, took the game to City at their home ground and came back with an important point.

Ange has done wonders with this team in such a short period and one can only look forward to what he is building here.
