After Tottenham Hotspur’s derby defeat, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was unapologetic in his criticism of Bryan Gil.
Spurs were humbled on their home turf last night, losing 2-0 in the north London derby which has, resulted in the team being five points behind the top four teams in the league. Additionally, the team’s coach Antonio Conte has yet to be given support in the transfer window this month.
Antonio Conte, who has been in charge of Tottenham for over a year, was provided the funds to improve the team, with 10 new signings coming in the summer. And several of these new players were in the starting lineup during the team’s recent defeat in the North London Derby. They did fall short in signing a couple of key players for key positions that Conte needed to address such as a top-class centre-back and a creative attacking midfielder.
Plus, the options available on the bench are not as strong. Conte has previously claimed that he needs more transfer windows to build the team to the level needed to compete with other elite teams in the league.
He wants more depth to be able to make changes that will impact the outcome of the game, which was something the likes of Gil could not provide yesterday.
And former Liverpool man turned pundit Jamie Redknapp was quick to point out that Gil is not the answer to Conte’s problems. He said:
“Bryan Gil is not the answer. I think he’s a good player, but he’s not when you’re talking top-level.”
The criticism of Gil is harsh since he has barely been given a chance to play. He hugely impressed at Valencia last season during his loan spell and the Spanish club wanted him back for this season but his move was blocked by Conte on the deadline day. Since then his development has seen a pause as he has not been able to get regular playing time at Spurs.
But the recent injury crisis allowed him to start a few games in a row and in the previous game against Crystal Palace, he was at the centre of everything happening as Spurs won 4-0.
It will be in Spurs’ best interest to loan him out again to a Premier League team in order for him to get some experience in the league to develop further but there is no doubt about the talent he possesses.
