Sky Sports man claims Tottenham star is “on his way out”

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty, according to Sky Sports football expert Micah Richards, is nearing the end of his Spurs career.

Micah Richards started the game against Arsenal on Sunday and Tottenham were outplayed in all aspects of the game, resulting in a loss that sent their arch-rivals eight points clear at the top of the table.

Tottenham are still searching for a solution at the right wing-back position, and Pedro Porro is a top priority target for the January transfer window, despite the fact that the last three permanent managers have all signed a player for that position.

On the BBC’s Monday Night Club, Richards evaluated the Tottenham lineup that started the game and specifically mentioned Doherty.

He said:

“We’re talking about what he’s dealing with. We have to be honest. It’s easy to say they’re not playing well, but he’s not been able to rely on what would be his ‘best 11’.

“And we’re only halfway through. Spurs are going through their dip and they’re boring to watch and they’re not giving the fans what they want to see, but a manager is working with the squad that he has and he’s working with a system that has worked in the past.

“I believe Spurs will come good because the manager says that.

“At this moment in time, if you’re looking at the players who played the other day – Doherty is on his way out, Sessegnon is in and out, he has some really good games but he’s not (consistent).”

Matt Doherty had a successful period of play during the World Cup break, where he scored in several friendly matches. He continued this form by scoring a goal against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Doherty recently expressed his desire to remain at Tottenham, despite reports that the club was considering letting him go.

And as per the reports, his willingness to stay has made it difficult for Spurs to offload a right wing-back, making the Porro signing a bit more challenging.

As important as the wing-back position is for Conte’s system, none of his right-back options are currently performing for him. For his team to improve, the Italian requires a world-class player to play the role.

And the two options Spurs have been most linked with recently are Sporting’s Pedro Porro and Dutch star Denzel Dumfries.

And if what Richards is claiming has some truth to it, then Spurs will very much likely be signing a new right-back.
