Ryan Mason starts with a win but will not be named permanent manager

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham defeated Southampton this evening 2-1 and overall, deserved it. It got Ryan Mason off to a winning start in his role as the Tottenham interim manager.

Mason can guide Tottenham to Carabao Cup success and win all the remaining Premier League fixtures and he will still not get the managers job permanently for one simple reason. He is not a brand manager.

And even if Daniel Levy did give him the job, he would have the shadow of an axe over his head at all times.

I like Mason, I want him to succeed and would have no issue with him being handed the job on a permanent basis but Levy is all about branding and selling Tottenham to sponsors. Having an unproven 29-year-old in the job simply does not fit the criteria.

It was clear this evening that the players had a hangover from the Mourinho era, that was evident from the lacklustre first half and all that Mason had to do at half time was to tell them he is in charge now and they can put Mourinho out of their minds.

Whatever Mason said, it worked and we saw a vastly different Spurs than we have seen for a very long time in the second half, whether that lasts, I do not know but it was still refreshing to see.

Spurs will still be underdogs against Man City at the weekend but I go into that game with more confidence than I did a week ago and I suspect a lot of Spurs fans will do so as well.

Mason has started well, the way the players embraced him at full time was good to see and I really do hope that this works out for the young man, he has got off to a good start and long may it continue.

But being the manager next season is very unlikely, certainly while Daniel Levy is in charge of Corporate Tottenham.

Whenever he wins he gets lucky, whenever he loses that’s his default position according to you. You’re beginning sound like a lunatic with an obsession…

😆 Yeah 5-0 against Angers.. This is expected. Their whole squad is valued at 74 million. About half the price of Mbappe or Neymar. One player of PSGs.. This is why its such a boring league and literally a one horse race with Paris winning everything.

No Amazon then no big name manager is a priority I’m guessing?

I agree. You’d have to ask the writer of this article. I assume he means a huge name who helps with Tottenham’s brand as it clearly did with the Amazon programme

I’m not sure what brand Jose represents anymore, if it were 10 years ago then ok.

It’s far from perfect but the ESL idea was a total abomination.
Changes obviously need to happen (as money is being haemorrhaged every season) just not poorly thought out cr*p stinking of pure self interest. By people who have no idea.

There’s a balance to be struck, like so many things in life…

Very few of Levy’s appointments have been brand managers and when he finally does it with Mourinho he has had his fingers burned. I think he will look to go back to an up and coming (non brand as you call it) manager like he did with Poch. So obviously Nagelsmann is a good bet

But that’s what the new CL format already was. Currently we and Liverpool get an invite due to being highest rated non qualifiers.

6 English spots because of coefficient, means they are buying fan bases. They know fans bases are more important than winning

I think Ryan has a fantastic future ahead of him, but it’s too early. We are part of the big six whether other clubs/fans like it or not but the chairman is a w@^¥€r and it isn’t right for him now and I mean now. You’ve seen how fans have been with Poch and Mourinho even on this blog.

And right on time UEFA announce quietly their expanded 36 team Champions League….which sounds like….a Euro Super League’?! With added elitist touches that could see the big boys get in even if they don’t finish top 4. This is what this last 48 hours of hoaxdom was alllll about. Protest this anyone?? Naaaah course not….Farce.
