Romano provides the latest on Tottenham, Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of Djed Spence

By Eddie Razo -

The right wing-back position is one Tottenham Hotspur will want to improve this summer, and one of the prominent targets that continue to be named in the media is Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence.

Spence has impressed while on loan at Nottingham Forest, where he’s helped the club reach promotion into the Premier League next season. As a result, The Reds want to hold onto the 21-year-old for next season.

For his column on Caught Offside, transfer window specialist Fabrizio Ramano gave the latest regarding Spurs’ interest in Spence, who states the north London club remains in direct contact with the player.

“Spurs are still in contact for Spence and consider him a possibility for their right-wing, but Fabio Paratici is always able to have three or four targets in the same position,” Romano wrote.

“Nottingham Forest is already trying to find an agreement with Middlesbrough to have Spence in the Premier League. Surprises are not excluded.”

Tottenham has already upgraded the left wing-back with the arrival of Ivan Perišić, who signed a two-year deal this week to join his former manager Antonio Conte. After that, the focus shifts to the right side, and Spence could be the target.

When it comes to the transfer fee, Transfermarkt puts Spence’s value at £7-million.

Conte was never going to hold firm at either side of the wingback positions. Wingbacks are a hallmark of his tactics.

Spence, if considered, is likely looked at as future homegrown depth rather than thought of as an immediate upgrade. Similar to how Sessegnon was handled. Could easily see him purchased and loaned back out to further develop. Conte and Fabio will most likely have other targets in mind for an immediate push to the position and to the squad.

All accurate enough, except for Royal. I’d be an upgrade on Royal; and my prime is long behind me.

I remember we were saying the same thing about Sessengnon. Chase him for 2 years and the boy has not given us any real football to make us stop and said it was worth the chase. Remember aMax Aaron anyone, he with 2 tries in the PL has not set the world on fire. While we were “interested” it was reported in some quarters Barcelona wanted him before settling on Dest. Also a few Bayern mentioned. Max is still at a relegated Norwich. Are all the scouts wrong?. The level of play and consistency needed make me want to roll with Doherty and Royal until the very least January. If we do not sell either this kid is a project. We need to keep the momentum of tried and proven players if for the sake of pleasing Conte mission which is a darn good one to back.

He looks good. Being the sleeping giants that Forrest are, I hope Spence stays with them for now and helps keep them up. What are they going to buy with 7 million? Half a Jack Clarke?
We could do with a quality new right back though. I wouldn’t mind Doherty staying, he definitely had long covid like Messi did. He had shaken it off and was finding his feet. And Royal I thought did well all things considered… If there’s a chance of upgrading either then happy days, but no disaster if they both stay.

Cant believe that Djed Spence is gonna add or detract from Spurs squad
I dont think he’s an upgrade on Royal , so that should say it all .
There are definitely better out there and with probably a better temperament too . He gives me an impression of “Diva” , might be wrong but he hasn’t done quite enough yet to convince…….

I’d said previously that we really don’t need any more prospects, but this one could actually make some sense. With Doherty starting to show the form, before his injury, that convinced us to sign him last summer, he and Spence could be fruitful competition for the position; and I’d take him over Royal any day of the week. This would leave funds to provide much needed upgrades elsewhere in the squad.
