Report: Tottenham showing interest in Barcelona man with a €500m release clause

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of a centre-back continues in the January transfer market, with the possibility of the club signing two instead of just one.

Spanish outlet Fichajes reported that Spurs and Manchester United are poised to compete for the signature of Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen.

The Lilywhites have made significant progress in the last few days to finalise the deal for one of their centre-back targets, Radu Dragusin.

Infamous journalist Fabrizio Romano reported earlier that the talks between Tottenham and Genoa are entering the final stages. Representatives from North London anticipate the deal to be completed by next week.

Spurs might shift their focus to another centre-half, considering that one is almost locked in.

Christensen is under contract with the La Liga giants until June 2026, with 2 and a half years still remaining on the current deal.

The Danish international has been a consistent part of Xavi’s starting line-up this season, making 19 appearances.

The Spanish giants signed the 27-year-old from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, securing him to a four-year contract with a release clause of €500 million.

Christensen formed a robust defensive partnership with Ronald Araujo last season, helping Barcelona keep the highest number of clean sheets in all of Europe’s top 5 leagues.

The report claims that Spurs and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on the centre-back’s situation and are prepared to make a move, considering the Spanish club’s financial situation.

The former Chelsea player boasts vast Premier League experience, having made 161 appearances for the Blues, which could prove invaluable for either suitor.

Dubbed the Danish Maldini by fans in West London during his tenure in England, Christensen is a reliable centre-half recognised for his composure on the pitch. He’s aerially dominant and comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Ange Postecoglou would prefer a defender of Christensen’s profile, but would not compel the club to pursue him if they manage to secure Dragusin.
