Reliable Journalist claims 23-year-old’s January move to Tottenham is off

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur are set to miss out on the signing of Pedro Porro.

According to David Ornstein from the Athletic, Sporting CP have repudiated the terms of a proposed deal.

The 23-year-old was expected to complete his move to the Premier League club before the end of the January window and Sporting were looking to sign the former Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin as his replacement.

It seems that Sporting want the release clause to be paid upfront and immediately. Tottenham were probably hoping to structure the payments.

The Spaniard has been in fine form this season, scoring three goals and setting up 11 assists for his teammates.

Porro would have addressed a major weakness in the Tottenham side and the latest developments will come as a major blow for the Londoners. It remains to be seen whether Spurs can revive the move in the remaining days of the window.

Antonio Conte has had to rely on Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal as his right-backs this season. Both players have been hugely underwhelming and Porro would have been a substantial upgrade.

The player is likely to be disappointed with the situation as well. He has proven himself in the Portuguese league and Porro would have wanted to make his mark in the Premier League now.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham are prepared to shift their attention towards other targets now. Bringing in a full-back should be a top priority for Antonio Conte this month.
