Pundit tips ‘lacklustre’ Spurs player to be dropped after ‘rash decision’ against Leicester

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur picked up a 6-2 win over Leicester City in the Premier League at the weekend.

Although it turned out to be an excellent result for the home side in the end, their performance in the first half was far from convincing.

Leicester caused them all sorts of problems in the defence and Davinson Sanchez in particular, struggled against the Foxes.

The Colombian’s poor positioning and decision making put his teammates under pressure. He also gave away the penalty which resulted in the opening goal of the game for the visitors.

Youri Tielemans scored from the spot and Spurs will be relieved that the mistake from Sanchez did not end up costing them points in the game.

Going forward, the Londoners will have to be better defensively and Noel Whelan believes that Sanchez will be dropped in the next game with Cristian Romero coming back into the starting lineup.

Romero is undoubtedly a far better defender and he is expected to partner Clement Lenglet at the heart of Tottenham’s defence.

It remains to be seen whether Conte is willing to give Sanchez another opportunity to redeem himself in the coming weeks. The former Ajax defender is a top talent but his rash decision making has been a concern for Spurs ever since he joined the club.

If he can cut out the errors in future, he could be an asset for the Londoners in the long run.

Whelan said to Football Insider: “That’s a challenge which has been present since he came to Tottenham. It’s an area of his game where he can be a bit lacklustre. He charged in like a bull.

“He can be so fantastic during a game but he’s always got that challenge in him. The player was going nowhere, and it was just a rash decision.

“It could’ve hurt Tottenham, but they bounced back quite quickly.

“I was surprised to see Romero on the bench. I think it’s an area of the field where you can’t have a player like him sat on the sidelines. He’s been the standout defender since he came into the football club.

“I think Sanchez has made Conte’s decision very easy for the next game.”

I think the same thing. Especially that Emerson would be great as a RCB under Conte.

I can’t remember whether it was on Leicester’s second goal or the pen where Sanchez was caught way upfield which left the whole right side open. He’s suited to play back, not really a ball-playing attacker that Conte likes. Clearly he’s told now to get upfield, but that’s not his natural instinct as a defender and he’s often caught out of position.

I think a really good coach adapts his system for the personnel available and that’s why I have some doubt about Conte.

Much like Royal, Davinson is a solid player totally unsuited to the position played under Conte.

Sanchez actually played in a back three under Poch – albeit in the central position. Not quite the same type of three though – in Conte’s system Dier is pretty much performing as he did when he played defensive midfield and dropped between the CBs

If this is what Conte has red lines over, i’d rather play Tanganga or Emerson on the right of the three, personally.

There was something about us not conceding for the last 9-10 hours of football when he played, but that went away when we played West Ham in August.

His days are numbered.

Doesn’t he have some strange lucky stat though? We never lose if he plays or some nonsense

Signed in 2017 for some 42M. I remember the comments saying exactly the same thing “can play well, but sometimes makes a rash decision.”

Five years on, no discernible change in that whatsoever.

Romero and Emerson were obviously benched for the fiasco at the end against Sporting. Surely both will start against Arse unless Cuti picks up a knock in international play, which seems likely.

It was the under 12 level of defending & lack of confidence to bring the ball down & play it out of defence instead of completely losing the flight of the ball & ending up trying to knee it away??
Brilliant occasionally, but panicky & erratic too often.
