Pundit reckons new development means Man City is now out of Kane race

By Bruce Grove -

Kevin Phillips is convinced that Manchester City will abandon their pursuit of Harry Kane over his transfer fee and move for Danny Ings instead.

Kane has told Tottenham he wants to leave and City has been tipped to become the club that wins the race for his signature.

The England captain remains one of the best strikers in the world and City needs to replace Sergio Aguero with a striker of his class.

However, it doesn’t seem like it would happen for City as Tottenham looks set to demand top dollar to be separated from their key man.

Football Insider reported earlier in the month that City has now become contenders for the signature of Ings and former Sunderland star Phillips, believes a move for the Southampton striker is more realistic now.

This is because Kane isn’t getting any younger and City will consider his long-term value and feel he is simply too expensive for them.

“It won’t happen now, which is huge for Tottenham” he told Football Insider.

“Guardiola has already come out and said that’s too much for Man City to pay. So I’d be surprised now if Kane does end up going to Man City.

“They can afford it but he’s not going to be an asset that in four or five years you get your money back for him. So you can sort of write that money off.

“Guardiola’s has already shown that he’s not fussed about playing with an out-and-out striker.

“But Danny Ings is obviously a much cheaper option. Would he give you the goals that Harry Kane would? No, but he’s a good player and he’s shown what he can do with Southampton.

“If he was to go to Man City then he’d get more chances. He’s a goalscorer and he works his socks off. We know City like to press and he can do that.”

Stewart’s reply is well-informed but like James says let’s remember Citeh have faced-down UEFA & essentially beaten them down before now. I’m not an MCFC person but I’m absolutely sure that their ONLY consideration is whether H is the player Pep wants – end of story.

I have a suspicion Citeh will go foreign, younger, cheaper. Say 60-75m? Don’t think Ings would be Pep’s solution. I can see H staying at least this season, just a hunch. Problem with Citeh is if they DID decide to go for it they COULD pay twice the price
anyone else could except maybe Chels. No-one believes Pep’s nonsense about not having the money – not even him!

It’s being replaced with a different version that allows clubs a little more ‘spending flexibility’ but it’s still in the pipeline (has to be discussed with EU Parliament & then put to the clubs to vote) & is not being introduced till 2022 at earliest. There’s also talk of a salary cap within the new ffp rules.

If he stays, think he won’t want to be THFC’s all time top scorer? & go on to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record? Or win 2 more Premier League golden boots to be outright most won? (& also won’t want to be England’s record scorer?)
Harry is one of the most driven players ever & I doubt he’ll stop scoring for 4/5 more seasons at least.
& all those records would be one hell of a legacy, whether THFC win anything or not & yes, obviously I’d hope they do.

Before you all pile in on Citeh (who are probably equal with Wham on my hate list) who has made Harry want to leave?

I certainly dont feel anything but spite for Citeh but they are saying “we want Kane but the price quoted is far too high” which is fair enough. I read an article a way back saying they dont actually spend massive sums about in the 40-60 m range but I expect they would have stretched for H but from say 100 to 150 is ridiculous. Now we will see what it does to Harry if he doesnt move. What if the goals dry up?

In the meantime, the Spurs FB page has played another blinder – this time, it’s a short video of Sonny entering the building, looking as if he was seriously contemplating the choices that brought him to this point.

My pancakes are all mushy with tears for Pep and City. The club that signed Ake for $40 before his jackstrap were dried from his final game at Bournmouth.

Doesn’t make sense, Ings isn’t fit to tie Harry’s bootlaces.

Exactly, should we all have a whip round to help poor Man City out.

I hope & believe you’re well aware that when Pep says “that’s more than we can afford”, he means “that’s more than we WANT to afford”. Not quite the same!

Where d’you get those spec frames – the clear ones and the black ones? They might be a bit large for my strong prescription but they are definitely cool. Thanks for the daily misery injection, keep it up!

This is hilarious now. They can afford him. Why would defending champions and billionaire Man City go for Ings??
That outcome would demonstrate absolutely what I’ve been saying.
Not City this year….
It’s happened season after season.

Sergio Aguero left City on a free, so they aren’t looking to turn a profit on every player.

Rent a quote. For all those pundits repeating that City don’t have the money and Financial Fair Play will stop them, two things.

The owner of City has a personal fortune of £17 billion. UEFA are relaxing FFP because of Covid to try and get money flowing again in the transfer world.
