Pundit is baffled that Doherty still cannot play for Tottenham despite his former manager joining the club

By Bruce Grove -

Alex McLeish cannot understand why Matt Doherty is still struggling to play for Tottenham now that Nuno Espirito Santo is his manager.

They worked well for years at Wolves and Doherty was in top form for the Premier League club.

He was expected to return to that sort of form at Spurs now that Nuno Santo is his boss again, but the Republic of Ireland has surprisingly fallen further down the pecking order.

Spurs signed a new right back in the summer transfer window, but even before the arrival of Emerson Royal, Japhet Tanganga had been playing ahead of Doherty.

It now seems the full-back could eventually be shipped out of the club as Emerson continues to impress.

But the former Scotland manager is simply baffled that the wing-back still cannot make the Tottenham lineup under the same manager whom he thrived under at Wolves.

“It’s a kind of strange tale, the Doherty one,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“He is an energetic full-back, wing-back. I don’t know what’s happened.

“I’m baffled by that one, that Matt’s not featuring more.

“It can only be down that he is not at the right level at the moment.”

A January move might be the best option for Doherty if he truly cares about still playing football.

And Nuno played with a back 5 at Wolves, I told you this before.. Get your facts right. 3 centre backs and 2 wing backs..

Yeah never a ‘left’ wingback though. I just checked. So you get your facts right.. I snap where I like.

Yeah, how long have Wolves been a Premiership club before he came to us? Championship fullback…

Also Nuno played a back three in the Premiership when he was there so Doherty was playing wingback during that time. Perhaps get your facts right before snapping back?

‘half decent left wing back’? In Scotland when he was a kid?… He was at Wolves for ten years and was always a right back.

We only got him because Levy saw him as cheap solution to a problem. But like everything Levy does in the footballing sense, it was a mistake.

I saw him as a half decent left wingback and a Championship level fullback. I’ve seen nothing since he’s been with us that alters that view whatsoever. Not good enough, out the door please…

Long covid I think he’s suffering from. There are marathon runners suffering from this 15 months after getting over covid. Fatigue, shortness of breath and more.. He looked a different player at wolves.

He can’t play for Spurs because he’s absolutely useless, and offers nothing going forward, he either goes sideways backwards or loses the ball. We need him sold ASAP.
