Premier League star reveals he wanted to join Spurs but club ‘refused the offer’

By Mehdi Gokal -

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has spoken out about a failed move to Tottenham that left him enraged with his former club Sporting Lisbon.

Fernandes spoke exclusively to The Athletic’s Adam Crafton about his interest in joining Spurs, but their bid fell short of Sporting’s valuation of the player.

The playmaker told Crafton that he was desperate to move to the Premier League, and that former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was the one really interested in signing him. However, Sporting swiftly rejected the bid made by Spurs which left Fernandes enraged.

He said:

“The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me but he spoke with me on a wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry.”

“Luckily for me, the manager (Marcel Keizer) was the right one at the right time.”

The 28-year-old eventually put his head down, deciding to give his all for the Portuguese club before eventually landing his dream move to Old Trafford. One can’t help but wonder what could have been had Spurs paid what Sporting was asking at that time. The Portuguese goes straight to the list of players Spurs regret not paying up for.

Yeah, same transfer window too.

Levy wanted two future Real Madrid deals in the making, rather than a player that would improve the team. So what’s new in Levyland? Nuffink…

Had a dip along with the whole team last season. He’s doing well again this year with CE in the middle. You must be pleased we got N’Belly, LoNoShow, etc instead.

Another example of low balling, is anyone surprised by this?

This is no secret. Same scenario with Frenkie De Jong, Grealish, Ruben Dias and Skriniar. Chief clown Danny the common denominatior. For some reason Ndombele wasn’t too expensive..
