Premier League issues statement after Lucas Bergvall’s goal was controversially ruled out by VAR

Tottenham Hotspur got back on track with a 3-1 home win over Southampton, putting their midweek loss to Chelsea behind them.

The result was a much-needed boost, lifting the North London side to 13th in the Premier League and injecting belief ahead of their upcoming Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Brennan Johnson was the standout performer, scoring twice in the first half.

His opener capped off a slick attacking move, and just before the break, he added a second with a cheeky finish past Ramsdale.

Mathys Tel sealed the victory with a last-minute penalty, ensuring Tottenham ended the match with a two-goal cushion.

However, it could’ve been an even bigger scoreline. Lucas Bergvall thought he had scored his first Premier League goal after turning in a header from Cristian Romero.

The celebrations were short-lived, though, as VAR intervened. After a lengthy check, Romero was ruled offside in the build-up, leading to the goal being disallowed.

The Premier League later clarified the call, stating that VAR had reviewed the play and found Romero to be in an offside position before the assist.

While the call aligned with the rules, the narrow margin and long delay left fans and manager Ange Postecoglou visibly annoyed.

They posted the following statement on X:

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Romero was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

Despite the setback, Tottenham maintained control for most of the match.

They created the better chances throughout, registering an xG of 2.21 to Southampton’s 1.04, and looked far more confident and cohesive than they did against Chelsea.

The loss confirmed Southampton’s relegation in record time—with seven games still to play, it’s the earliest any side has gone down in Premier League history.

For Spurs, this win arrives at a crucial moment.

With European hopes still alive, Postecoglou will be urging his players to build on this momentum and take that form into Thursday’s massive clash against Frankfurt.
