Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hijbjerg has been linked with a move away from the club and Napoli are keen on signing him.
According to a report from Football Italia, ‘preliminary talks’ between the Italian club and the player’s entourage ‘have already started’ and it remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement.
The 28-year-old Denmark international has fallen down the pecking order at the North London club and he needs to move on in search of regular football. He is unlikely to play regularly during the second half of the season and he is too good to sit on the bench.
Hojbjerg has proven himself in the Premier League with clubs like Tottenham and Southampton. He is certainly good enough to play for a club like Napoli, and it remains to be seen whether the Italian giants can secure an agreement with Tottenham.
Ideally, the North London outfit should look to hold onto the Denmark international until the end of the season and sell him in the summer. They are already lacking in depth when it comes to the central midfield and players like Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will be away on international duty during the AFCON.
Letting the 28-year-old leave in January would weaken the midfield even further. Tottenham need quality and depth in their squad in order to secure UEFA Champions League qualification and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
The opportunity to play for the Italian champions will certainly be an attractive proposition for the midfielder and he will want to try out a new challenge at this stage of his career.
