Some Spurs And Fans In General Are In Desperate Need Of A Reality Check | opinion

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham, like most other clubs, has been linked with a multitude of players, some have been reasonable and some have been, for the want of a better word, hysterical.

The Coronavirus pandemic and suspension of football has had a clear impact on Tottenham, more so than most clubs and it is a stretch to think that Daniel Levy will be sanctioning massive transfer fees.

There is a valid argument that even without the pandemic and suspension of football that Levy was unlikely to be giving the go-ahead to any big deals anyway.

Therefore, when you read about players being linked with a move to the Tottenham stadium with an £80-£100 million transfer fee attached you just know it is unlikely to happen.

One of the players constantly being linked with Spurs has been Lille’s Victor Osimhen (The Standard) but his price makes him an unrealistic option, he simply will not be setting up camp in North London next season, not if his reported valuation of £94 million is true (The Express).

The same applies to Philippe Coutinho, not because of his transfer fee, whatever that will be but because his wages make it unlikely that he will be signing for us despite the likes of The Express claiming that Spurs will meet his wage demands.

Players like Ryan Fraser and Willian could be more realistic but in the case of Willian, can you really see Levy agreeing to pay a 31-year-old with no resale value in excess of £100k per week? (The Metro)

Fraser will not have a huge wage packet in comparison but he will demand a signing on fee, that you can take to the bank.

The reality is that unless Tottenham offloads a significant amount of players and when I say significant I mean four to five players at a minimum, there is little chance that we will see much action in the transfer window this summer.

That is the reality, in my opinion, no matter what the rumours are claiming.

Even Sugar made marquee signings. Overall and in context of the time, Sugar was no worse an owner than ENIC. Won the sane amount of trophies in less time too.

Klinsmann, Ginola, Ferdinand, Popescu, Rebrov, Scales, Ziege, there may have been others, but these were all established players of top quality. We have never signed the equivalents under ENIC, I’m not saying Sugar was great, he clearly wasn’t but saved the club from actual financial peril too.

As a result ENIC came in to a debt free environment at Spurs back then. 20 years later we have the same trophy haul of one League Cup only with an added 750m of debt….

ENIC OUT.

Yeah levy had been getting better breaking his wage caps recently. He had to though or everyone would have wanted to leave.. Didnt city used to pay half adebayors wage for us?. Lol.. Reportedly barca have offered phillipe to bayern and the toon and also offered to pay part of his wages…. If the lad wants to come back to the prem then we should be all out for him… Buying one or two marquee signings is hardly brave to me. I just want our signings to be more clever, more savvy.. Like a few more deles for 5 million would be genius right now. Levy makes a couple great signings, then shocks with 4 or 5 that he shouldnt have. Undoing any previous good work.

Coutinho’s would be nowhere near the 80-100m mark anyway. Wages would be the main issue as Levy won’t pay the going rate to any established quality player.

For example, VDV only came because Real agreed to subsidise a portion of his wages rather than have a sick note player on full whack. Unless Coutinho is a case like that it would never happen, virus or no virus.

Fans that want us to kick on from the mediocrity of the majority of the last 20 years want Levy to be ‘brave’. Our old manager wanted that too and look how that worked out.

Going nowhere under ENIC, even more so under Jose. The whole project under our owners has reached the end. It is dead, the only way out of this purgatory is if these con artists sell up…

ENIC OUT.

I’m best off living with the slight hope (or delusion) that we will sign quality like coutinho in a position we need….. Opposed to the reality that we are more likely to sign another winger like frazer..
