Plausible Spurs XI to face Chelsea – graphic

By The Boy -

Spurs will be up against it tomorrow, despite mumbles in places that Tottenham are suddenly in a position to tear a side like Chelsea apart, like warm bread. Southampton were appalling last weekend, and the value of that form is precisely 3 points and not a single penny more.

Chelsea’s form at home wasn’t up to their usual standards last term, but historically our form against this lot is horrific. Will Richarlison and Perisič swing the balance in our favour?

Put up some actual verifiable facts Daniel

Yep, Hoddle changed things there and Bates spent a lot of the money generated from the building project on the team. That ran out and they were very close to going out of business until the Russian arrived with his dirty money…

Agree wholeheartedly on the last bit their fans are spawned out of the gutter.

Hmmmmm, Tuchel is no mug and he’s made a habit of out-thinking us. We attack predominantly on the break; we don’t tend to do the “scramble a goal” thing through a well packed defence and we have little success from long range.

I’d guess that Tuchel will sit back, organise a solid defence and hope to catch us on the break. The contest may be to see if our Light Brigade approach of last week will stand up to the scrutiny of a much stronger and more well-disciplined side.

I’d guess their first line of defence will be in the middle of the park, slowing our advance and allowing their defenders to organise for anything that comes through. As such Bentancur and Hojbjerg will be key to our tempo going forward and holding steady defensively until our wing backs can get back to cover our flanks. I suspect that if Conte expects this too, we could be using the full complement of subs to switch it around to, as Harry says, find the right key to open the lock.

I agree we need to at least get a point here and Conte will go for a win if its on, but will not do so at the risk of losing a minimum of a point. Its a long season and whilst an enthusiastic driving force, Conte is also an experienced campaigner and pragmatist.

Kane & Son should be bang on it after showing how badly they wanted to score.

The pressure is on our starting XI to show how much they want it, if not Richy, Perisic, Bissouma & Royal’ replacement will be on.

It’s one of those, if you can’t win, don’t lose.

But I feel like Kulu will be bang up for it, just as the rest of the team will be, like playing the Top 2 last season.

Conte went all weird against them last season. The last game he not only went with a back four, he also had a crusty fullback pair of Davies and Tanganga, AND Sessegnon and Doherty wide. A 6-2-2.

They are in a bit of flux so can see the benefit of keeping last week’s side for continuity. Hojbjerg is my worry – need him on his A game in possession.

Utd, when they were good, still got beat at OT. We just got battered. Bit like Anfield in the 70s and 80s. You look at City and we seem to be a bit of a bogey team to one of the best teams ever to play in the English top flight. We rarely have looked to be a match for Chelsea, home or away for nearly 25 years (7 wins I think).

Remember going to their hellhole ground in the 80s with my dad. Ground was half empty.

Totally agree. Great insightful post as always. Southampton are a much better team than us. We just got lucky. I still feel that Conte has no clue what he’s doing.
The recruitment has been shocking. Kane & Son got nominated for the Ballon D’Or under Conte’s watch. What a joke! They couldn’t even score against Southampton.
I wouldn’t nominate them for employee of the month at Chick-King!
Has Conte got what it takes to beat Chelsea? Probably not. Even if we do win I still count it as a loss because I just can’t stand Daniel Levy!
We are in a relegation battle folks.. make no mistake about it! Doomed i tell you!!! Doooooommmmmed!!!

Thank god for this blog & Eddie Razo. It’s the only sane place on the internet.

Briefly in the very early 70’s….maybe. They were then bang average or yoyoing from about 73 until 93. Stamford Bridge is falling down phase is what I am referring too. It was Hoddle as manager that began what turned into their golden period.

I really do not like Chelsea. I like winning against them more than Woolwich.

Team picks itself especially since Conte stated that both Perisic & Doherty aren’t at their best yet after their injuries.
So Perisic & Bissouma to come off the bench and Richarlison of course.

Yep, their defence needs to settle with the two gone but going forward and in midfield they’re more than capable. They will be up for it, which also might offset their poor form to an extent l. I expect a very tough game, I’d take a draw now…

I’m with you on that. Best time to play them. TBH I’d take the draw away from home to them.

You can bet Chavski will up their game at The Fridge, it’s a derby and their players will know the significance of the game. Best chance in a long time to chalk up a win over there, however it wouldn’t surprise me if this ends a draw. Derby games often mean throwing the form book out the window…

It is shocking in those four games we failed to score a single goal… But we last played them in January, nearly 8 months ago. We are a different team now. And so are they.

I watched the Chavski struggle against Everton last week. They are a far cry from last season. They scraped their win with a penalty.
Many fans and pundits think we’re favourites because we are.

I would love to see Perisic and Bissouma for 45 minutes… Sessy, Benty and Hobby all deserve to start, though it wouldn’t surprise me if one or two of the newbies do.

We got nowhere near them in 4 matches last season, so we should be much more capable and hopefully cause them some problems at least. We have to get out of the mindset that the Bridge is impenetrable. We had this with Old Trafford for far too long.

When we played Chelsea last season we didn’t have Kulu, Bentancur, Richarlison, Bissouma, Perisic. And Romero was hurt. Skippy too for that matter. And now 7 months of Conte. I have some hope for tomorrow.

I would like to see us start the game with 3 in the middle and just Sonny and kane up top, so we can take control of midfield as that’s what I believe we need when playing them
Last season we got swamped in midfield, so maybe that and get Kulu or and Richarlison on Kate..

First game 1967 TTT, I still regard CFC as a very dangerous team. Cannot see their new owners not building to push …like us CFC’s previous regime spent a lot of money on players that didn’t fit ..
A win over there would be massive ..

Chelsea are on a journey back to mediocrity. It just isn’t obvious yet. Lots of unsettled players and the loss of the Abramovich backing is the real problem. Chelsea were always title contenders. Now they are in a battle for 3rd and 4th place. How long will it be until the champaign supporters throw in the towel?

They will need Bate’s cattle prod back if they are left with an empty wallet, the knuckleheads and a half empty ground.

Let’s hope those great days will be back sooner rather than later and the unravelling process begins tomorrow.

To older Spurs supporters the Chelski phase was the football equivalent of Millwall winning the lottery.

Agreed. They replaced Rudiger with Koulibaly, one of the best defenders in Serie A, and some people would have us believe we’re suddenly favourites to beat them on their own patch.

Do Chelsea have problems ? Christianson left wasn’t used that often …Werner has left he never really cut it at Chelsea..likewise with Lukaku.their real loss was Rudiger..it’s not like they haven’t signed some decent players ..Koulibaly , Curculla, and the lad from Leicester decent, ..in keeping Azpilicueta they will have their driving force..I expect a physical game ..we have to be up for that 1-1 or 1-2 Spurs.

I think we were maybe only once or twice in a position where people expected us to get something at the Bridge (including the “battle”). I don’t remember those occasions turning out well. In fact, I remember only one occasion turning out well in the last 12 years.

They love beating us and are always up for it, regardless of form, transfer dealings or ownership changes. We have a huge mental obstacle to overcome.

Considering all this, a draw would suit me. Losing would see us back at square one, and I don’t think I could stomach all the pundits – who have been bigging us up on little evidence so far – doing a 180 to “Spursy”, “mentality issues”, “Kane and Conte should leave”.

Winning would be an early statement of intent and a huge morale booster, while it could also derail Chelsea’s start to the season.

Crucial game. Let’s not bottle it.

Beating Chelsea tomorrow would heap pressure on them and add to their problems. Conte will not want to lose this one that is for sure.

I expect a tight game. I’m optimistic but have a feeling the referee / VAR may have an impact on the outcome.

The Bridge is a graveyard for Spurs. Would take the draw but what would a convincing Spurs win do to the morale of both clubs?

Let’s hope McNamara’s Band turn up.

Come on you Spurs.
