Perhaps Ledley King Knows The Truth

Some particularly nasty Guillem Balague quotes have emerged via the Express. Quotes that leave little room for ‘explanation’.

Whilst Manchester United is allegedly a primary Real Madrid transfer target, Mauricio Pochettino’s confidant believes Christian Eriksen is the preferred target.

“I’m quite certain Florentino Perez and the club would like Eriksen instead. Cheaper and a more Real Madrid player.

“Modric I believe they want to sell because they need to raise money, so you don’t have Modric but you have Eriksen, that’s sorted out.”

Modric of course is currently 33 years old, and 34 in November.

Eriksen has been off the boil since Christmas, which is regrettable, but only reflects the inability of the club’s owners to pay the Dane what he is arguably worth.

Perhaps Ledley King Knows the truth? The Tottenham legend was quoted on TV as saying:

“He has year left on his contract and of course other clubs are going to want him.”

“He’s vitally important. But we know in football that players come and players go.”

What Spurs fans know themselves however, is that whatever cash the Eriksen sale brings in – won’t be enough to correct the current wrongs in the Tottenham squad.

I have a very good memory for that particular season of 64-65 because it was my first season and I was a very intense ten year old fan. Funnily enough, except that we won most of them, I don’t remember too many of the actual home scores (and would need to look them up), though I clearly remember the three draws! But I remember most of the away results without looking them up, though I have no recollection of probably our worst result: a 4-1 reverse to Fulham. Selective amnesia in this case?! My first result as a proper fan and I’m waiting for scores on Grandstand was the third league game, 1-4 at Everton! Ominous beginning! I had missed the best years already, alas.

I think either way, he will go within the next 12 months; for one thing, the United job will be on offer again! I think were we to win it, he might go straightaway thinking it a suitable full stop, what with no funds to play with to realistically win it again or the league title. I think he would quite probably see a victory in this season’s CL as a miracle unlikely to be repeated.

Is it not the case that Barca lost 3-0 to ROMA last year after winning the first leg 4-1? yes, the same Roma that lost to Porto, who were then thumped by Liverpool for the second year running; so you see, last night’s reversal of fortunes was clearly always possible,

Why won’t we? Ajax are overrated and we’ve more chance against Liverpool than we would ever have had against Barca. When have we ever beaten Barca? Beaten Liverpool a few times recently and if we had’t fucked it up at Anfield would have ended their title challenge over month ago…

I’m taking Poch’s remarks as; “If I can do it on this budget and these constraints then that will be the one of greatest achievements in the history of football and it will be impossible to top.” Which looks like what he meant to say.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he walked though, Levy only wanted Champions League status going into the new gaff.

Levy is not interested in the next phase of the footballing project. His version of the next phase will inevitably backfire because he will hire another DOF, another ‘grateful to be here’ manager, keep selling our best players, not pay the going rate wage bill.

Without Poch that will mean no top 4 and 6th or 7th at best… Bald Twat.

True but they don’t have Messi, he couldn’t dig his team out of the shit last night which he did in the first leg. Barca are clearly not what they were but fully deserved for Liverpool to go for it and overcome their shakey defence.

I wonder if Poch’s threat to quit after the CL applies equally if we fail because he will know that without significant recruitment he is banging his head against the wall.A squad running on fumes and with no bench cannot possibly go the extra mile.
He will be impressed with Liverpool’s hunger and desire last night and know, whether he publically admits,it we can’t match that.We have gone as far as possible.Levy will be the reason he quits.End of.

Bindippers deserve all the credit for an amazing performance. Barca played their part though, they were very Spursey weren’t they?!
It was compelling viewing but lord have mercy the papers and the radio and all of the media will be awash with shite today. “those magical European nights at Anfield” is a phrase oft used and for once in my lifetime it seems genuinely applicable. And Boy oh boy, the media are trotting that line out everywhere. I’ve read a smattering of stuff today though and the hyperbole is off the scale. It was fantastic, but Barca played like England did against Iceland in the Euros. Initial over confidence, followed by the reality of failure looming to paralise even the most skillful and special player in world football. Barca lost this game as much as Liverpool won it.
If we get to the final I think we have a great chance to win it. Ajax first, of course, and in my view tonight offers a more difficult game than the final might be.

A shot across the Bow?

Scary statements from Poch; I heard the interview and it did not sound like any
misinterpretation! I’m sure we can all translate that into our
“own-speak” to reflect what we each think, but there is little room
for any translation that does not sound like a threat.

This won’t be the first time that Poch has taken a pot-shot at Levy via the media,
but his position has never been stronger or his need greater. For THFC to lose
a manager like Poch will be seen as a disaster by the media, fans and players,
both ours and any we might have had an interest in – no matter how cheap. For
Levy it will mean the loss of a man who has managed to cover his skinflint arse
by achieving, even under the most meagre of circumstances.

But what has prompted this? One of the most interesting things in Poch’s comments
includes the phrase “under these circumstances” which may refer to
the stadium but seems much more likely to allude to the minimal resources he
has had compared to those he is competing with. One might take a small leap and
think that he may be aware of circumstances where that under-resourced status, has
already been flagged as “unlikely to change”.

Speculating a bit further, Poch has seen the loss of very winnable games, a squad he‘s
built being gutted with key players about to leave, no new blood to refresh and
bolster the squad, maybe no chance to get players who Poch wants and are
willing to come but not if they are to be paid peanuts. On top of this let’s also
speculate that Levy has stood his ground and is unwilling to open up the wage
and transfer barriers beyond a minimal amount and not going to sanction actions
to secure Eriksen and Toby.

Whilst that’s a lot of speculating, the accumulation of “these circumstances” is
classic Levy – he’s got away with this shit and will (once again) go for broke
and try to get away with it again.

Given even some of that, Poch’s statement to the media may not be so surprising; let’s
imagine for a second that he’s basically saying “screw this” and whilst he
fires the team up for the Champions League, like Redknapp, his mind is elsewhere
when it’s come to the EPL – he’s achieved the minimum standard required. His resume
reads: “I took a very average mid-table club with some potential to 4x CL qualification and a Semi/Final/Winners in 2019 on a very limited budget”.

Despite knowing that he’s highly sought after, given the prospect of no new resources,
the disbanding of key elements of the squad and limited options to recruit and
replace, he may simply feel this is as far as he can get and it’ll all be
downhill from here: basically a good time to get the hell out!

My own view is that much of this speculation is really closer to analysis: an arrangement
of known facts. Certainly the performance over the past couple of months suggest
a squad and manager with some specific goals – qualify for CL next season and
get as far as we can in this year’s competition – and after that we all go our separate
ways.

Has a Champions League winner ever been relegated the following season?

Who’s gonna be second in the CL? No way Liverpool fail to win the Cup now. Funnily enough, myself and Dilly didn’t think the tie was necessarily over. I had a feeling that there might be some significance in Barca not getting that fourth with a good chance in the last minute of the first leg. I truly believed that Liverpool had a slight chance of turning things around and were worth a punt to still win the CL; I placed a tenner on them at 20 to one! Looks inspired business now.

And I think they may still do it in the league, too. If Brighton were to get the first goal, I think City could struggle to turn things around; those two centre backs of theirs have been pretty useful of late.

As for us, I think we’ll successfully avoid losing to the bin dippers in the final by going down tomorrow night. Not much chance of us getting anywhere near the two greatest teams on the planet in the next few years, is there?

Pooh have generally got better, smarter and quicker players than us in the right positions. They can be terrifyingly unpredictable going forward at times where as we have become terrifyingly ponderous and predictable. I hate to say it but they also seem to have more character and desire to win when it really counts than Spurs. As someone else mentioned earlier, it helps when everyone from the owners down are focused on actually trying to build an exciting football team capable of winning things, rather than a debt laden shopping centre that no-one actually wanted or asked for. To dare is to do.

They added two good wingbacks and s great centre back, Amazingly these wingbacks can cross the ball which appears beyond the capabilities of ours and our coach. The real difference though is they want to play they want to win they get paid market rates and they all know they belong to a club that has owners who want to win, They are polar opposites to the parasites who own our club and the way our club is run

Fair play Pooh, can’t take anything away from them, they really do have a very good team after their Summer additions (revolutionary idea to buy and strengthen a promising team that are almost but not quite there) and they have gone toe to toe over both legs against Barca. They deserve to be in the CL final and where they are in the league, no getting away from it.

We’ll just have to be happy with a regressing team and a shiny new toilet bowl full of debt.

Incidentally, we finished 6th in 64-65 and the one team we beat away, Notts forest, over Christmas, finished one place above us in 5th spot. I saw three of our sad efforts away: 1-3 at Wolves, 0-1 at Birmingham City and 2-0 at West Brom. Wolves and Birmingham were subsequently relegated. Prominent, or rather not so prominent, in our team at that time was another bad signing from Arsenal, Laurie Brown. Happy days!

poxy

My dad used to tell me that they couldn’t play without their wives and girl friends…..over fifty years ago! My first proper season of following Spurs was 64-65 a season in which they managed just one win and four draws in 21 league games away from home (18 wins and three draws at home!). In the Cup that season, before going down to Chelsea at the Bridge in the fifth round, we drew 3-3 at Torquay after they scored first and then squandering a 3-1 lead in the last three minutes. Scorer of those two late goals a former Birmingham City player, Robin Stubbs, at the time married to Anthea Redfern, I believe, Bruce Forsyth’s later missus!

Of course, when we do get the away form right, we implode regularly at home instead ie 84-85 when we managed, on an earlier occasion, to finish third in a TWO horse race with Everton! I think at one point we lost five out of six home games, including a 5-1 shellacking from Watford!

It’s one thing to agree personal terms, but quite another to negotiate with the esteemed chairman.Whatever price Levy asks for Eriksen, should the sale look like going through, then Madrid had better be prepared for a hard road. They’re reportedly already balking at Pogba’s price.
However if Levy holds out then Eriksen could walk for free in 12 months time, but what sort of performances would we get for him.Not that Levy gives a shit.
