Tottenham Hotspur’s challenging season took another severe blow with a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, ending their hopes of winning the Carabao Cup.

After securing a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg, Spurs had high hopes of ending a 17-year trophy drought. However, an injury-hit squad struggled to compete against a dominant Liverpool side under Arne Slot.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has voiced concerns about manager Ange Postecoglou’s future at the club.

Robinson believes that discussions about the Australian’s position could become unavoidable following their upcoming FA Cup clash against Aston Villa.

The lackluster performance at Anfield highlighted Spurs’ tactical shortcomings, with the team failing to register a single shot on target throughout the match.

Robinson acknowledged that Postecoglou’s job had been safeguarded by strong Europa League showings and a chance to win the League Cup. However, with Spurs now out of the Carabao Cup and struggling in the Premier League, the pressure is mounting.

Speaking to Tottenham News, the pundit remarked:

“I think they will be having that conversation on Monday. Spurs have a very difficult game against Aston Villa and a week is a long time in football. How they played against Liverpool was extremely disappointing – they were tactically inept again.

“It was one of the poorest performances I’ve seen. It’s disappointing in a semi-final not to have a shot on target, which a lot was made from. But I didn’t expect them to get a result against Liverpool.

“I’ve always said that the thing keeping Ange in the job was the first 10 games at the start of last season, which a lot of people are hanging their hats on, the fact they’re in all the cups and how well they’re doing in the Europa League.

“But this week, they’re out of the EFL Cup, and they could be out of the FA Cup on Sunday if they play like they did against Liverpool. The conversation about Ange’s future really starts to heat up next week. They’ve got no chance of getting Champions League football.”

Currently sitting 14th in the league standings, Tottenham’s campaign has been heavily disrupted by a growing injury crisis. Key players such as Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, and James Maddison are sidelined, with a total of nine first-team members unavailable.

Defensive instability has been a major issue for Postecoglou, while the absence of attacking options like Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, and Timo Werner has made matters worse.

The upcoming FA Cup fourth-round tie against Aston Villa will be pivotal for Spurs. A win could breathe new life into their season and keep them in contention for silverware, offering Postecoglou a vital lifeline.

However, another early exit would likely heighten scrutiny of the manager’s position and increase calls for change.

As the club faces a critical week, Tottenham fans will hope their side can rebound under Postecoglou’s leadership and reignite their faltering campaign.
