Despite delivering an ‘outstanding‘ performance against Fulham, doubts continue to shroud Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Danish midfielder has seen himself fall down the pecking order under manager Ange Postecoglou, with Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr becoming the preferred choices for the midfield.
However, Bissouma’s suspension against Luton gave Hojbjerg a rare opportunity to start against Fulham.
He deputised well in Bissouma’s absence and put in defensively solid performance in the middle of the pitch.
However, the lack of playing time has led to speculation about Hojbjerg’s potential departure in the January transfer window.
Clubs such as Juventus and Atletico Madrid have expressed interest in signing the midfielder.
According to Lee Wilmot of Football.London, Hojbjerg remains uncertain about his long-term future at Spurs.
Wilmot noted in the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast that despite his doubts, Hojbjerg displayed professionalism and commitment to the club.
He said:
“Hojbjerg showed what a class individual he is really. He came in and gave it 100% even though he doesn’t know if his long-term future is at the club. He’s aware that Bissouma is the favoured man for Ange Postecoglou in that role.”
“I can’t fault Hojbjerg and his professionalism.”
Tottenham may opt to retain Hojbjerg, given their current shortage of options in midfield.
Additionally, Bissouma and Sarr are expected to be unavailable for up to six weeks due to their participation in the upcoming AFCON, making Hojbjerg’s presence even more valuable.
While doubts persist about his future, Hojbjerg’s recent performance demonstrated his value as a reliable presence in the midfield, and Spurs may continue to rely on him as a vital option this season.
