Tottenham dynamo Dele Alli has landed himself in the midst of a media storm thanks to video footage – he took of himself in an airport lounge – being leaked to a national newspaper.
In a nutshell, the 23-year-old, wearing a hat and a face mask, was looking about in a covert manner, and then panned his phone camera upon a man of south east Asian appearance.
Was this video racist in nature? In my opinion, no.
Ill advised? Certainly. As with so much of the world these days, this is simply something that some/many people have found distasteful.

Well when you’ve had your country nicked from you, you might find you become a ‘racist’ too. And the way unabated immigration is going on in Britain today you’re about to find out what it’s like.
And don’t say South Africa was ever a black country, for when the whites arrived there in the 16th century no blacks occupied that part of Africa. South African blacks always came in from the north as labour seeking work.
The royal navy in general are all cabbages mate. Their training and dress tells it all. Rank is respected across the board even corporals and sarges gain respect. The marines are the ‘elite’ soldiers of the royal navy though, their training and standards are higher. The next step up is the secret boat service whom are mostly marines…… I was a paratrooper which is the army equivalent to a marine.. Elite.. Any nco or officer across the army will tell you similar about the paras.. Truth is that they couldnt do the training themselves. Seriously tough and loads drop out. After the paras the next step was pathfinders or sas.. Some seriously heavy soldiering… To suggest any elite unit or regiment in the BA are full of cabbages either doesnt have a clue, or are jealous. The pass rates are far lower than the average army and navy. They are elite in comparison you dont get an average joe becoming an elite soldier.. Running is only one tiny factor of the job and most people even fail that in testing. The paras and marines are elite the training is tougher, the tests more difficult, they put you through it mate… The regular army and navy is easy to pass in comparison……… my point originally anyway was that the white south africans were racist swines, and they got what they deserved (a jolly good thrashing) 😂

I think people need to grow up about it a bit. We all know what racial hatred looks like, we also all know every race has it’s own racists.
There is a lot of space in between assumptions and ignorance and racial hatred.
When much of it gets flagged up and falls under under this catch all term ‘racism’ to define everything, is when the problems start.
If someone describes someone from China and how they look, what are they gonna say? Africa, what they gonna say? Scandinavia, what they gonna say?
If someone living in those countries or has the same nationality doesn’t look like that, does it make those assumptions ‘racist’? When I think of an African I don’t think of a white South African or Kenyan for example. Or a Caucasian person from Hong Kong, the list goes on.
This makes descriptions of people, culture and these assumptions a complex thing but it shouldn’t be a mine field that you can’t walk on without getting accusations of racism.
This thing with Dele is pretty much all about this, nothing to do with ‘racism’ at all.
There probably needs to be a new definition of the term made clear so it can’t be thrown around like some kind of cheap accusation just because it suits someone.
Basically the world needs to grow up…

No comment apart from the fact that one of my lads used to be a Royal Navy petty officer and the general consensus of opinion amongst petty officers was that of the marines being cabbages that could run fast.
The biggest racists I met were white south africans i worked with in plymouth. They were beaten to a pulp in a pub on the barbican by a black royal marine and 5 or 6 of his white mates… Some russians i have come across were pretty backwards too.

Ok so imagine the back story to this is an outbreak of ebola in Congo. Someone posts a video of themself in an international airport wearing a facemark and looking comic nervously from side to side before turning the camera and zooming in on a random black person chatting on his phone. A black person who is as likely to be from Toronto, Trinidad or Tottenham as he is from Congo. Would that not be at all “ist” either?

When I saw this plastered all over NewNow Tottenham I refused to click on any of the links, thinking that it was purely click-bait. Presumed that it was one of Dele’s inane pranks, with the ‘Asian man’ being Sonny. Not sure how Sonny’s fans will react to this at our next home game though. Cue club PR exercise with Dele teaching lame hand-shakes to Asian children.
Probably falls under ‘racial stereotyping’ based in current events rather than cultural assumptions. If Dele had been pulling his eyes back with his fingers for example, to do the tired old ‘china man’ impression then yes it’s blatantly racist. Not so clear cut this, as much of this stuff sometimes isn’t.
For example, if someone says that Sweden is best known for ABBA, legalised hardcore p*rn and a high suicide rate would that be racist? It would be laughably inaccurate and nobody would take it seriously. Is this so different given the 24 hour news coverage of the outbreak?
