Official Tottenham starting XI v Crystal Palace – Royal, Kane and Skipp start

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham sits proudly at the top of the Premier League and a win over Crystal Palace in the early afternoon kick-off at Selhurst Park will see Nuno Santo’s men remain at the pinnacle of English football, for this weekend at least.

The international break has not been kind to Tottenham, three players that have featured prominently this season, Steven Bergwijn, Son Heung-min and Oliver Skipp have all picked up slight knocks and of course, we will be without the South American trio of Davinson Sanchez, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero.

At least Harry Kane is back scoring and the transfer saga that disrupted the summer does appear to be behind us all now.

This is the team that the boss has gone with and considering the absentees, it is still a fairly strong lineup. Let us know in the comments below what you think of the line-up that Nuno has gone with and maybe your own score prediction.

My point is that after all the Mourinho out nonsense we haven’t improved anything. That includes playing staff but importantly a manager who can manage a squad and a game.

Nothing I’ve seen so far convinces me that we’ll finish in the top 8 let alone 4. We are miles off what the likes of city, Utd Chelsea are doing and only 4 games in.

He can fly in a bit more at fullback and he’llnhve a defender behind him. Try that as the last line of defence and it’s different kettle of fish. Learning curve I guess, he’s a kid,,,

Skipp has played 4 games for us. He’s been decent in one. Okay in another. And pretty poor in two. Not a dig at him. He’s only young and has potential. But we shouldn’t be so reliant on a youth prospect (make that two with Tanganga) already.

Forgetting the win now mentality which we should have but don’t, putting this much pressure on kids is more likely then not going to harm any chance of them being a success in the future.

A football man would have bought a top striker now so he could bed with the squad and be ready when Harry does go. Instead we’ll buy someone for half the Kane cash next summer and put the world on his shoulders too. Money always talks. Depressing

The problem with Dier going off is at least he is capable of playing a pass 30 yards & is comfortable on the ball… Rondon isnt as comfortable on the ball & neither is Japhet so playing out from the back was problematic… kane isnt going to win too many hoofs up the park & sons pace & trickery were sorely missed. Chelsea next…we could easily lose by 3 or 4… if we lose our next 2 games the vultures will be circling….

How many “top 6” clubs have a player that simply isn’t interested and refuses to play? Spurs are quickly becoming a clown college of a club and the sooner the majority of fans realise this and do something about it the better. Owners have to take ownership for their cluelessness as they would in any business, we the fans cannot keep bailing them out of their moronic decisions that seem to be based on “punts” and with a view to “build for the future”. The future is now, we are witnessing the death of a once-great football club at the hands of inept cretins.

Even flying high under Poch the vibe we were given was that the club were uncomfortable being ‘ahead of schedule’ on the project.

Guess we’re more comfortable again, limited expectations, limited pressure, quiet ‘yes man’ manager

Skipp is fine as a defensive midfielder, we just need another more creative, attack minded midfielder. Lo Celso is often injured or getting himself into trouble off the pitch and Ndombele is just not that interested.

Let it sink in. 4 games in unbeaten and today we lost 3-0 to a team likely to battle relegation. Not a single shot on goal in the first 45 mins.

Disgraceful on every level. We are no further forward than when Mourinho was in charge.

Over 20 years to this, you can blame the players, the coach, the philosophy, the DOF, the scouts, the sports science, even the fans. This result was perversely predictable, its something we do unfortunately and the issues are the same.
But after 2 decades the buck only stops at one place.

I don’t think we played badly from a defensive pov, even with the changes forced upon us, Rodon was excellent imo, however the rashness of Tangy and the unfortunate handball had a huge impact on us. I do believe the break affected us especially those who had travelled and played in the WC games, we definitely looked below par, but the telling thing was the refusal not to use Ndombele at any stage, that is a real concern.

I was concerned how paper thin our squad was in the Euro Conference league mess in Portugal. Criminal how Levy has allowed the squad to slide since the glory days of Poch when we won nothing because the squad was too thin even then.

Glory Costs Too Much

Massive risk going into a season with just one recognised striker has been exposed already. We’ve had so many chances to strengthen our frontline and Levy has passed by every single one, even when it looked like Kane was off. Watkins, Inngs, Edourd.
Instead we buy players that won’t improve us one jot this season, not for the first time either – £40m wasted on Sessegnon and Clarke, and defenders.
I hope Levy spends all his time at the EDC and doesn’t get involved in our transfers ever again. Bale gone, Vinicious gone and Kane not giving us 100%, just where are our goals going to come from? Bizarre.
Can’t really blame Nuno, he clearly stated early on that he wanted to play with 2 strikers…

Tiger Tail

For all the talk of negative systems and defensive selections, what I find most depressing is the lack of quality throughout the starting 11, let alone the squad. I don’t think we could dominate position and create a ton of chances even if we wanted too.

Fernandes, Grealish, Dias, Martinez… All those near misses. What did we have today? Skipp and Winks in midfield. The poor transfer policy the past few years has been criminal.

Too many changes, it felt slightly like naivety from a match preparation perspective. I have nothing against Nuno but perhaps after the manager award etc he felt slightly over confident.

Having said that, does he have a massive choice with the players missing? We clearly lack depth…

East Stand

I would say that there were a few things that conspired against us today.

Firstly the players missing and chiefly Sanchez were missed. For all his and Dier’s faults previously, they have looked reasonable in the early fixtures. I’m not sure Tanganga has ever played at this level at centerhalf before but I can understand why he was picked with Royal at RB. Rodon perhaps but that would be mainly hindsight. We lack depth in quality basically.

Changing the system too much didn’t help either, the three man midfield looked unfamiliar as did Tanganga and Royal.

I don’t see this performance as our ‘true’ level but it is certainly indicative of the limitations of both the squad and possibly even the tactical nous of the manager. Why do we have these limitations? Because football always comes a distant second, in Levy Land.

So so right about academy development. All of our London rivals produce top quality players and Kane apart ours despite having world class facilities produces Winks Tangangay and Skipp. The guys at Chelsea currently on loan would walk into out first team.

Gil has plenty of creativity – too much for Nuno’s liking. He said that Gil wasn’t doing what he was told in a Euro game. Thats why he is a creative player – also a great leader by example which is why he wears the U21 armband. Ndembele another with flair, something Nuno doesn’t seem to like.

At least we have a world class academy,oh wait a minute.Chelsea have two very good young MFs in Gallagher and Gilmore and they are having to go out on loan because there is no way into the first team.

They have both shown they can play at that level.Where are the energetic MFs coming out of our academy pushing for a PL starting birth?

Why didn’t Nuno make any changes apart from those forced upon him?He had Gil and N’Dom sitting on the bench and we were crying out for creatifity.Kane was getting absolutely no service.I bet he’s pleased his proposed move never materialised.

We have a tough game away to Rennes in midweek which I fully expect us to lose. How many more matches will Kane put up with with no service? It’s always been our problem, the bench is so weak.Any problems in the starting 11 and we suffer.

The transfer window was truly abysmal. Zero steps forward for over three years regarding transfers.

In this window all we got were unproven replacements for experienced players that weren’t actually at the heart of any of our issues.

He had to pick Japhet as we had nobody else other than the even more inexperienced Rodon. The defence is still wafer thin, not sure what Paratici’s role is but if it’s advising on squad depth then he’s done nothing.

Mind you, Daniel doesn’t listen to anyone, he knows best. Which is why the club hasn’t experienced any chaos over the last couple of seasons… 🤔 Total pr*ck.

Deserved everything we got in this match, clueless players who are well out of their depth. The first 3 wins were lucky, anyone with half a brain could see that. The painful rebuild looks like it still has 10 years to get sorted. Midfield is bereft of creativity, strikers isolated and defence an utter shambles. Rodin and Tanganga lost all confidence they would have otherwise gained today.

Absolute and utter crap. Negative team selection. Zero creativity in the midfield. Did we get one shot on goal the entire match? Kane isolated and looking disinterested. Our “marquee signing” isolating in Croatia. Dele Ali is a joke. Contributes nothing except giving away possession and stupid free-kicks. Nuno looking bereft of any ideas on the bench. Three scrappy 1-0 wins in which most of the time we were outplayed. Reality comes home to roost. Davies is still at the club and once again gives away a goal. Nothing changes and this was supposedly a good transfer window. Dear oh dear oh dear. This club is poison.
