‘Now it suits us..’: Postecoglou hints a change of role for underperforming Tottenham ace

Tottenham striker Richarlison has had a difficult time since joining the London club and he has not been able to live up to the expectations.

The former Everton striker scored just one goal in the league last season and he has found the back of the net five times in the league so far this season.

The Brazilian will be hoping to get back to his best and justify the investment in him in the coming months.

The 26-year-old has been used as a winger as well as a striker since his move to the North London club. Manager Ange Postecoglou has now revealed that he could use the Brazilian in a central role in the coming weeks, especially with Son Heung-min away on international duty because of the Asian Cup.

The South Korean international has been leading the line for Tottenham since the start of the season and he has done well. Naturally, Richarlison was used in the wide areas.

He said to Football London: “We played him (Richarlison) out wide, on the left, because he was struggling with certain things at the start of the year in terms of his body and it just made sense for us to play him in those wide areas and we had Sonny who could play in the middle and he was going well at the time.

“Now it suits us to have Richy through the middle and Sonny out on the left, but with Sonny going, there is always the opportunity to play Richy out there as well.

“I mean, that’s where he played the majority of his Everton Premier League career and scored a lot of goals out there. So there’s always that possibility as well.

“Again I like players who are multi-functional in that way and if you look at our front players – whether that’s Sonny, Kulusevski, Johnson, Richy – they’ve all played just about every position there and at the moment us having Richy at nine is working well for us and we’ll continue with that but there’s always a possibility that it could change.”

The Brazilian played as a centre-forward during his time at Everton, and it remains to be seen whether he can impress in that role at Tottenham now.

Although he has never been a prolific goalscorer, he can be quite effective in the final third with his link-up play, technical ability and movement.

He was expected to step up and fill the void left by Harry Kane and the fans will certainly hope that a change in role could bring out the best in the player.
