‘Not in Kane’s class’ Respected journalist warns of potential striker crisis at Spurs

By Mehdi Gokal -

Recent reports suggest that Tottenham are becoming more open to selling Kane to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year.

The situation has been further fueled by reports of Kane’s wife scouting houses and schools in Munich, indicating the possibility of his exit from the club.

Several strikers have been linked with Spurs as replacement for Kane. One of them is Lille’s Jonathan David.

He signed for Lille in 2020 and since then has made 136 appearances for them, scoring 58 goals and assisting 9.

The 23-year-old Canadian striker is viewed as a fantastic long-term addition to the squad.

However, journalist Paul Brown believes that the he is not of the same level as Harry Kane.

He told Football FanCast:

“Spurs aren’t going to be signing a 30 goal a season striker to replace Harry Kane. It’s just not possible this window.

So, Jonathan David is a very talented player, if he comes in and scores some goals for them, I think everyone will be reasonably happy.

He’s not in Kane’s class. I wouldn’t expect him to reproduce what Kane did.”

Another name under consideration is Brentford striker Ivan Toney who too has consistent proven himself in the English League.

However, the 27-year-old is currently serving a ban imposed by the FA due to betting-related charges, Toney’s availability on the pitch will be limited until mid-January 2024.

Our view:

Replacing Harry Kane is a challenging task. Not many strikers can score 30+ goals consistently every season, that too in the Premier League.

The only direct replacement for Kane in terms of profile and status would be someone like Kylian Mbappe.

And while they have been recently linked with a move for the Frenchman, it is extremely unlikely that a move will materialise.

It will be hugely important for Spurs to use the money they get from Kane’s sale wisely and not repeat the mistake they made with the Bale sale.
