Tottenham Hotspur recently confirmed that defender Japhet Tanganga has been released from his contract.
The 25-year-old defender was on loan at Championship club Millwall this past season and he was quite impressive for them. There were rumours that the defender could join the club permanently this summer. Now reports (h/t Spurs Web) claim that Ipswich Town are keen on signing the Tottenham academy graduate after he was released by the club.
Ipswich have secured promotion to the Premier League and they need quality players at their disposal. Improving the defensive unit should be one of their priorities. The 25-year-old defender could prove to be a quality addition. His contract with Tottenham expires at the end of the month and signing him on a free transfer would represent excellent business from the newly promoted club.
Tanganga has played in the Premier League before, and he will be determined to prove himself in the English top flight. He was highly rated when he managed to break through to the first team scene at the North London club under Jose Mourinho.
Although he has failed to make his mark at Tottenham since then, he remains a talented player who could be a quality addition for a newly promoted side. Furthermore, he is versatile enough to operate as the central defender as well as a fullback. He will add quality and depth to the Ipswich defensive unit.
It remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement with the player in the coming weeks. The likes of Millwall and Luton Town are keeping tabs on him as well, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
