Tottenham’s new sporting director, Johan Lange, is reportedly working on the club’s first signing, aiming to bolster the defense.
While Tottenham currently boasts a solid defensive partnership in Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, their squad depth remains a concern.
However, Spurs have a problem with their squad depth. Having gotten rid of the likes of Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez, and Sergio Reguilon in the summer – Ange Postecoglou is really short of defensive options.
The only back up senior option to the centre-back position is Eric Dier who has not been able to impress Ange. He has not played a single game for Spurs this season and is likely to leave on a free next summer.
Ben White is another make-shift option that can be played as a centre-back if needed while Spurs can also call young defender Ashley Phillips who they signed in the summer from Blackburn.
However, it is no secret that Spurs will be in the market for another centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window.
They were linked with Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly in the summer and it is a name that has continued to be linked with Spurs.
According to Football London, Spurs are set to renew their interest in the Bournemouth defender in January.
As per the report, Tottenham can now ‘sign the former England Under-21 international for a much cheaper transfer fee due to his contract status’.
However, the report adds that they could face competition from Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature, both clubs being keen on signing the centre-back.
With Kelly entering the final six months of his contract in January, Bournemouth may be willing to sell for a reduced fee rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.
This January transfer window will provide an opportunity for Spurs to strengthen their defensive options and address squad depth concerns.
