New Manager On The Premises

By The Boy -

Keen eyed Tottenham fans will have noticed over time, that Brad Friedel always comes across as rather wise old owl in his interviews.

Also, prior to André getting the boot, he was frequently seen discussing something or other with AVB and his team during matches.

Brad’s analysis of games and general media contributions are routinely balanced fare. He comes across as a guy that has actually picked up a hell of a lot over his *ahem* few years as a professional footballer.

Talking to Ben Pearce in Ham & High Broadway, it was good to hear that Brad is planning to share the wealth, and stay in football once his playing days are over. He is due to complete his UEFA A-licence this year.

What interests me is something involved with the game, whether it’s coaching or management. I’ve done quite a bit of punditry too.

I think when you talk about management especially, even more so than the coaching, you have to get your chance. People always have this thing – is it a risk taking on a young manager? Listen, it’s a risk taking on any manager.

From my standpoint, it’s a great area to watch a game from and to learn from. When I started doing my coaching you pick an area on the field that you see best from. For me – if you’re doing phases of play, for example – you go and stand behind the goalkeeper and you can see everything.

I think that [lack of goalkeepers becoming managers] comes more from the fact that, many moons ago, people thought goalkeepers were crazy and they were sort of just set aside. I’ll agree that some goalkeepers are eccentric, but you can’t be thick to be a goalkeeper. You have to make too many decisions at too short a notice to be thick. Of course you can be eccentric, absolutely, but to be a top goalkeeper you can’t be thick.”

I think that Brad could make a decent manager. That said, anyone wanting to venture into Premier League football management these days, definitely needs their head looking at.
