My Hopefully Cogent Reaction to Daniel Levy’s Bizarre Video Interview

By The Boy -

Here’s our illustrious leader’s tape which I might suggest you watch before watching my reaction as I do go through the salient points in chronological order.

Here’s my talk-through/walk-through, which I hope some of you find of interest. I feel I have been fair and as rational as one might reasonably hope for, whilst retaining the passion that the disillusionment has spurred on.

For me, THFC is in a world of trouble and the full extent will not be immediate for some time.

I’m not saying that at all! I was relieved to see the Debt could be erased in 11 years BUT THEN, reading on, I saw that that was dependent on our continuing to finish in the top four and not spending on players, which, of course, would preclude us from finishing in the top four, meaning that this debt will take a whole lot longer than 11 years to eradicate!

Hey Richard a very astute comment. But you miss the point here is a place for everyone who thinks they can manage the club, organise the coaching, get the right coaches, buy the right players, tell how hard players are working, stop injuries, win matches and trophies , and do it all better than the people who actually doing it.
They have hindsight and lack of responsibility turned up to max so no hard questions please.

Can’t disagree with much of that H. Seems to me though that Levy has described his corner beautifully. ENIC have nothing left other than investment in the 1st team. No more infrastructure smoke and mirrors. No more excuses about the debt he created and the prudence required to escape it. This was HIS plan to bring success ON the pitch. He cannot escape that self made corner. Significant, targeted, intelligent investment in the first team now or he’s done for.

Brilliant, brilliant video TBH, resonates what everything I’m thinking of, now convinced I’m right. I am going to get my ST refunded or sell every game on the ticket exchange, even though I know I won’t shift it for every game, I’m prepared to take the hit. I usually buy 2 kits for myself, 1 for the other half and one for the child, not happening, definitely not. And have instructed other half for Christmas, definitely please, nothing for me from the Spurs store.

I am not funding half hearted Levy and ENIC shit any longer, it hurts my club? Yes it does, but it also hurts the economy of York if I go shop in Leeds , that’s what happens in life.

I am absolutely furious about the impending appointment of Fonseca , I will not support him or give him my backing because he’s a cheap Levy gamble , for which Paratici is being accredited with approaching him. Also, Paratici joins the club on July 1st. Why did Spurs and ENIC announce it on Saturday just gone? So everybody would make the link and think , ahh, Paratici has joined; Fonseca is obviously his recommendation/ choice. Bullshit. He’s ENIC/Levy’s choice and they’ve manipulated the situation for publicity to smooth the path for Fonseca. Footnote :- Fabio Paratici’s contract with Juve ends on 30th June, 16 days away .

I’ve had lots telling me I should get behind the new man. Should I? Why? From what I’ve watched I don’t like his teams, I don’t like his style of play, his record against top teams in Italy is abysmal. Then I get told ‘but hey Roma were doing well until they got lots of injuries’ … ok then , Spurs have a history of injury problems, so if we’re Top 4 (no chance) and we get a spate of injuries and finish 10th…. Will that be ok? Is that acceptable to Spurs fans?

The key point this pillock is missing is that NOBODY asked for the stadium and NOBODY asked anyone else to borrow almost 1bn to build it.

In the meantime Leicester’s owners (an infinitely smaller club) have overseen them winning the league and FA Cup in under 10 years.

Levy has to stop with this constant drivel about the ‘long term’. The “long term good of the club” is now apparently brighter, yet unprecedented “long term” debt has been created to do it? What good is that to anyone, apart from you and your mates at ENIC?

We have waited 22 years to get to where we are now and have one League Cup (13 years ago) up until this point. Now we are told that “we need to be pwudent”, so another 22 years of prudence and then what??

Its over for Levy and the fans now, unless he gets over to Barbados before Joe pops his clogs and convinces him that money needs to go in. They need to understand the need to step things up then things Weill get so ugly that no stadium sponsor will want to touch it with s barge pole.

The original plan of peddling the penury myth is off the table, it just ain’t going to cut it. Not with the fans and I suspect anyone decent wanting to be associated with the club or the stadium…

For all those that previously mocked it;

Illuminating information about Wimbledon’s virus insurance and THFC’s lack of it. I was unaware.
I can tell of our club’s attempted (?) purchase of Leeds United’s (and now England’s) Kelvin Phillips :- A coupla years back I was at the Perth Optus Arena for the Leeds Utd vs Man Utd game. I happened to have a word with the ex-Leeds player Michael Bridges, who has obligations with Australian media, about Spurs’ attempt to buy Phillips. He told me our club had offered 11 million. My immediate reaction was, “That ain’t gonna do it!” “No it’s not!” Was his reply. Says it all about our leader’s negotiating skills doesn’t it?

How he thinks we’ve been hit harder than any other club is astounding.

How he can say we all want to win, when for decades he’s tried to win on the cheap.

“ What we want and what someone else wants” …. That’s code for we over inflate our valuation for our players. We’ll stiff you last minute for yours.

I couldn’t go much further. The mans deluded, not that the same amongst us didn’t already know it.

You’ve nailed a lot of it Harry, but I’d like to add a couple of observations.

I think Levy now knows that he has screwed up: thus the statement.

I understand he has been over with Joe Lewis and maybe the extent to which he dragged the ENIC flag through the mud was a topic of conversation, between sips of pink gin and tonics and spreadsheet reviews that is.

Projects hinge around three components: Time, cost and scope – change one and the others have to change to accommodate. You want it quicker? Hire more people (increasing the cost), or make it smaller or of lesser quality (reduce the scope).

There is another element though and that’s “out-of-scope” considerations. This would be things like the extent to which people, (consumers, residents, or in this case supporters) can be pressured to absorb the inconvenience, delays, etc., whilst still contributing at the same level. In the case of THFC this leveraging of the fan-base, supported by waiting lists for season tickets, shirts and merchandise sales and manifested in two years at Wembley, has allowed Levy and ENIC to complete the initial phases of the property development plan….. basically at our expense!

Levy has found it far easier hide his ineptitude at the overruns on cost and time (due to his scope coming to include the NFL and his inevitable cack-handed interference and micro-management), due to Poch’s success on the field and the money it generated. The uproar otherwise would have been deafening and the credit far less easy to come by!

But Levy got away with it because Poch was the one making the headlines and when Poch ran out of steam we were served other distractions like Mourinho and Gareth Bale. There is always a slip road to divert traffic away from the mainstream highway of the property development. But (and forgive the ongoing metaphor), the bitumen has run out, we’ve run out of road and now face a stony path ahead!

We are and always have been, the “out-of-scope” buffer. But the buffer has woken up – Levy has run out of excuses and as the spotlight has turned onto him its showing the dirty secrets. Somehow he has escaped criticism by the media, who have been content to scapegoat Poch and then Jose………..but then we the football fanbase, are the “out-of-scope” buffer for the media to employ press release shufflers, instead of real (and more expensive) journalists.

But an uprising has started, and its coming from the grass roots causing Levy to spin whatever he can to divert criticism and blame for the current situation. But when even the amateurs of the mainstream media start to notice, re-arranging the deck chairs will only divert for so long. Levy cries Covid, but everyone has the same conditions. I don’t quite agree with you H about the insurance thing: 91 out of 92 didn’t take up the insurance, Wimbledon were the dummies who bought everything the salesman sold them and sort of lucked-in having cover when the unforeseeable hit.

But Wimbledon did not make Champions League or even the Ropey – no, 6 other teams did, all of whom did not have cover: my point being that they were on a level playing field, same as us as far as Covid was concerned and………does anyone really think that if we had been insured it would have made any difference to the subsequent events at THFC?

Levy was right about DNA – however he failed to note that his DNA is not compatible with THFC. He is a rogue chromosome changing our DNA into something less – it only takes a tiny degree of change in our DNA to turn a man into a chimpanzee.

Levy and ENIC are not in our DNA sequence, they are mutagens trying to change our DNA one cell at a time: viruses trying to replicate through the THFC host cell………………..but you don’t need to be an exobiologist to understand that to THFC, they are the equivalent Covid!

Ps, Some really excellent comments below!

You are assuming that by not investing for 11 years we will still be in the top 4 for that time and even if by some miracle that were the case that ENIC would then actually invest actual money into the team.

Excellent vid H.

Steps to squeeze ENIC

– please do not buy any merchandise sold/connected to the club
– this is hard but please consider boycotting games. This isn’t about not supporting the team it’s actually the complete opposite
– if you go to games please do not spend a penny inside the shopping complex. Get in and get out
– keep spreading the message about ENIC, levy apologists are actually turning their thinking

Fans need to seperate their thinking here. This isn’t about not supporting the team. It’s about recognising how damaging ENIC have been to the club. As H said, ENIC are the threat. It’s actually the fans duty to THFC to expedite the removal of these parasites.

Only 11 years to pay off the debts, rather better than I thought, perhaps there is hope that I may see a successful Spurs side again before I pop my clogs, and then I read your if we finish top four every year and don’t invest in the squad at all! ENIC, Levy and The Self Sustaining Football Club Enigma.

Harry H. recently took a long hard look at the Penury Myth wheeled out by Levy and ENIC as a justification for their penny wise pound foolish approach to all things THFC. He neatly diced and sliced ENICs position on this illusion revealing yet another falsehood of smoke and mirrors. In Levy’s car crash of an interview with his in house Spurs TV supplicants there was reference made to THFC being a self sustaining football club. This is a management speak buzz word that is typically reeled out by accountants and spread sheet aficionado’s but I decided to dive deeper into the rabbit hole to find out if this description was definitive or subjective. I decided to look at THFC in comparison with a club of similar stature that also declare themselves to be self sustaining and see if the ethos and vision was the same. I chose Liverpool FC because just a few years ago it would be fair to say that THFC was on the up and they were decidedly heading the other way. If both clubs were operating to the same self sustaining business models then how was it possible that Liverpool appeared to not only halt their slide downwards but to turn the fortunes of the club around and overtake us at a rate of knots that saw us disappearing rapidly in their rear view mirror.

When Levy and ENIC use the term self sustaining to describe THFC they mean a club that requires no investment from the owners and is one that can service all of its operating costs through income. A self-sustaining club that lives and succeeds within its own means without external investment. There is no investment in the football business in relation to players as the income from sales finances the costs of new players. Capital acquisitions such as the new stadium are financed via income and debt financing. Once again there is no investment from the owners. They purchased the club with borrowed money and have run it for 20 years without investing any of their own capital. There is no skin in the game for ENIC at THFC.

However, football these days, particularly at the highest level where the rewards are huge, requires enormous investment and always offloading our best players to make ends meet is never going to be a model for becoming an established and successful team in the Premier League. It is estimated that it will take 11 years to pay off the stadium debts if the club make top four every season and use all the income from the new stadium to service the debt with no funding going towards investment in the playing squad. The problem with that virtuous ENIC circle is that you cannot qualify for top four every season without having the highest quality players involved in the team. The ENIC self sustaining model is therefore a treading water ideology that is always jam tomorrow when it comes to football success and is all about top four qualification. The club never progress’s as it’s owners have no desire or ambition for it to do so. Its customers are charged top prices for a product that does not exist They are led to believe that it does as the slogans emblazoned all over the new stadium tell them “The Game Is All About Glory” and To Dare Is To Do

So how is it that Liverpool FC another self sustaining club appear to have achieved that success ? This is where self sustaining becomes a subjective description dependent on the owners running the club. When Liverpool were descending at a rate of knots behind us their owners decided that a self sustaining football club was one that had to invest, find ways to outperform, reinvest, and do it again until you’re at the top.
Their CEO Peter Moore stated that “ultimately that is what our fans want and that is what we need to deliver”….”what Liverpool had to do was bring in a world-class manager, which we have; bring in a world-class squad, which we have; play exciting football, and build financial security at the club”

The goal for Moore, in the end, is always to turn success into reinvestment in the club. To find ways to outperform other clubs with similar resources and investment. To turn that over performance into more revenue and greater resources. And then to do it all over again.
“When we look at the health of the club, our revenues have doubled in the last five years and been reinvested,” Moore added. “We have steadied the ship from some dark days nine years ago. We take great pride in our business model: a self-sustaining football club.
“You drive revenues as best you can to invest on the pitch and that investment pays off and global sponsors and advertisers want to be a part of that which will again drive investment on the pitch. That is the modern business model for high-performing football clubs.”

So it would appear that you can be a “self sustaining football club” and still “Invest”. THFC are in the mess they are in both on and off the pitch not because of a pandemic, or lack of funds as a result but because their owners have not invested any money into the club but have looked to harvest as much money as they can from the club. The question therefore is that if they do not bring any investment to the business and if they bring no success on the pitch they are performing no function of any value. Look at the direction where Liverpool’s owners have steered the club over the past few years and look at where ENIC have steered THFC club over the past twenty years. The problem at THFC is clear and it is a four letter word ENIC. That is why Levy’s attempts to play the victim card in his incredulous interview is both sickening and further evidence of the duplicitous nature of his and ENICs character.

Another acutely accurate podcast Harry. Now in my late 70’s I have been supporting Spurs since the late 50’s, long before many of you good gentlemen out there. This man Levy has appalled me! He tells us Porky’s of unbelievable magnitude, and with a straight face! Like the asset stripper he represents he is all about self enrichment (colossal 4 mil salary) from using borrowed money and supporters hard earned incomes. If he really cared about the club and advancing it’s on the field fortunes he would never have foisted us with the cut price also rans he has recruited. If he had paid a little extra he could have given us Bruno F who has certainly made a difference at Man Utd. To name but one choice. The man is incorrigible and I for one will not be putting any more funds his way. WE have to unite in our resolve to rid us of the ENIC plague and restore our club to it’s former glories. Not many will remember but in the sixties Spurs beat a full England squad in a friendly.
Those were the days so let’s see them again.!!

For a brighter future to come around, we actually need things to get worse first; if we were to find ourselves in a highly perilous state and Enic were getting pelters from all sides, we might actually get shot of them! That’s the hope anyway. I’ve seen what happened to Celtic’s old board (essentially a three family dynasty) that brought them to within minutes of administration and, over 50 years ago now, the take over of Aston Villa from a board that had been living in the past.

“Statistics can be used as a drunk uses a lamp-post: for support, rather than illumination” (or something very similar). I myself originally came across that saying in an excellent book I have “Britain versus Europe” by Roger Macdonald (Pelham Books 1968) which tells the story of our clubs in Europe over the first dozen years of the European competitions that commenced with the old European Cup in 1955-56 with the bulk of the book devoted to the European Cup itself and culminating in Celtic’s victory in 1967.

This is all so perfectly spot on! He is a self-serving, disingenuous, cowardly, deceitful embarrassment of a businessman and even less of a sound football man. I fully agree that all of the crap going on for Spurs now is of his own making. I have spent a few hundred quid at least each season on tickets, merchandise and shirts since sometime in the 90s when I started earning my own money but I absolutely will not be spending anymore under this regime. There is SO much frustration and to anyone with a modicum of intelligence, you can see that we are still a way from the bottom of the barrel sadly. Like you said!

One line in there that struck home ….. “it’s heartbreaking” SPOT ON!!! It really is, but the ****** {insert asterisks and letters at your will} will never realise or impact on their life/lives. People may mock me as I live in North Wales and very rarely get to WHL, but I remember being heartbroken losing at home to Birmingham City on my birthday visit to the Lane in February ’84. I remember being heartbroken listening to the radio and losing to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1983. I remember buying my Shoot magazine after losing a League Cup semi to an Ian Allison goal for Arsehole in 1987. Cried after the Cup Final in the same year. Even heartbroken after such a shit performance in the CL final against the Scousers in 2019. That was meant to be my special day, as a 44 year old with a stent and 3 ageing daughters, my 2 day old son’s first ever footy game (glad he will never remember anything about it!)……I can live with disappointment but these utter sewer rats are ruining our club. If Kane has had the misfortune to have watched the toe curling, self exculpatory, toxic bag of dog sh*t that Levy served up yesterday, it will have reinforced his belief that he has made the right decision to leave his boyhood club. In fact, he is probably thinking to himself at this moment, why has he stayed so long?
The two things that stood out for me in the sycophantic deluded mess was Levy’s laughable claim to have spent approximately £1.5 billion on the club. This is complete self delusion. We all know , as HH alluded to in his Vlog, that this money was spent on the acquisition of bricks and mortar to enhance the asset value of Enic’s property portfolio. The fans know that Lewis and Levy have enriched themselves at the expense of the football club’s success.
Levy’s attempt to smear managers by suggesting that they did not want his selection of Ligue 1 chancers, rather than the manager’s own picks was deliberately aimed at Poch which was self serving rubbish.
The best advice I can give Levy, apart from stepping down, is never to be interviewed publicly again because he does not come across as a remotely decent human being.

Spot on H.

This video from Levy is terrible. The fact he thinks it will make things better is also terrible.

For me one of the most frustrating things is that Spurs never needed to go mad and spend 500 million. 1 proper decent signing in each transfer window when we signed no one would have kept us in contention. The hardest thing in transfers is buying a goalscorer but we didn’t need to do that because we already had Kane and Son. Just needed to replace Dembele, Wanyama and now Jan and Toby. Instead Levy left it to rot and now the squad is rotten.

Make no mistake, there is no way out of this now other than to spend big. We know that won’t happen. Therefore the situation is going to get worse. We are absolutely screwed. Anyone that says otherwise is in denial.

When you actually have to come out in public and say that you want to win there’s something amiss.

100% correct Harry . Levy is a virus, unfortunately we couldn’t take insurance out on that .
I remember when arsenal built their stadium my dad saying they might get in financial trouble if they miss out on top 4 etc . I remember wishing it would come true , low a behold it’s actually our club that will likely tank . We are so undesirable atm , why would anyone want to manage under this cretin or play for the club in it’s current mismanaged state ?

I particularly enjoyed the dog minisegment (in the last video) – today I enjoyed the comments on Levy’s pathetic “pity me” routine, when most things he uses as excuses were and are of his own making.

That’s the problem with being a micromanaging lunatic hellbent on controlling everything related to the club – if said everything goes wrong, it’s only too clear who’s to blame.

Good grief. I hope you don’t have a critical opinion on anything outside your particular area of expertise.

Some great players in the mid 90’s too. Some who would work for the shirt. It’s the oldest spin trick from ologists in the book. I’d av it back in a nano second. WHL forever.

I could not agree you with more. I watched Levy’s interview yesterday and was apoplectic.
What a load of complete bollocks spewed from his mouth, the utter contempt he holds the fans in is just incredible.

I work for a large multi national business and we invest regularly in new manufacturing sites both green and brownfield.
I can tell you for a fact that we do a thorough and expansive risk analysis assessment and insure against for every conceivable possibility that could negatively impact the business, so it is staggering that these clowns did not.

But unless a miracle occurs and Enic get offered the money they want, whatever number that maybe, we are saddled with them for the foreseeable future and I simply do not know what we can do to get rid of them.
I have stated before that obviously the pandemic has been a get of jail card for Levy and the owners as he and they have not had to face the fans every other week therefore dodging our real and visceral loathing for them.
But I am not sure that DL and the rest of the them would be touched by this…so what to do!

I apologise for not having anything funny to say…

And how many football clubs have you directed, to voice cricism over Levy’s performance? A little humility goes a long way
