Tottenham face a challenging season compounded by injuries, with Micky van de Ven’s absence being a significant blow to the team.
The Dutch centre-back has been sidelined since late October, missing seven games due to a hamstring injury.
His unavailability has disrupted Spurs’ defensive structure, leaving a noticeable gap despite the solid efforts of Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin in his place.
The absence of van de Ven’s established partnership with Cristian Romero has further hampered the team’s cohesion at the back.
Injury expert and physical therapist Dr. Rajpal Brar provided an update on van de Ven’s recovery, citing the defender’s history of hamstring issues and his dependence on speed as reasons for a cautious approach to his rehabilitation.
Although van de Ven has returned to training, Tottenham are wisely prioritising his long-term fitness, potentially keeping him out for a few more matches to avoid the risk of re-injury.
Speaking to Tottenham News, the doc said:
“He’s a player with a history of hamstring injuries and who relies on his high pace.
“So this could be a situation where they are being very methodical with his rehab despite his return to training so he can handle those demands and not suffer reinjury.
“This is why Spurs are not rushing him back and he could be missing the next few games as a result.“
Van de Ven has been a key asset since his move to Spurs in August 2023. He has quickly became established himself as a key figure under Ange Postecoglou, contributing both defensively and offensively.
He scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 victory over Luton Town last October. He was also recorded as the Premier League’s fastest player earlier this year, showcasing his athleticism.
In 10 appearances this season across all competitions, the 23-year-old has provided two assists, underlining his value to the team.
Beyond his defensive capabilities, van de Ven excels in ball-playing attributes, ranking in the 95th percentile for pass completion, 93rd for successful take-ons, and 91st for assists among defenders.
As Tottenham look to regain consistency and climb the Premier League standings, van de Ven’s full recovery will be critical. His return could restore much-needed stability to the defence and strengthen Spurs’ push for success in the ongoing campaign.
