Mark Lawrenson gives his Newcastle United v Tottenham prediction

By Bruce Grove -

Mark Lawrenson has backed Spurs to beat Newcastle United when the Premier League returns this weekend.

Spurs will take on Steve Bruce’s side with both teams targeting a good end to the season.

Jose Mourinho’s men return from the international break with just three points separating them from the top four and a win in this match could push them closer to their goal.

However, they face a Newcastle United side that is struggling closer to the relegation zone.

After investing so much in their playing team, Steve Bruce’s side cannot afford to drop down divisions and they would enter the game intent on making a statement.

Just two points separate them from the bottom three and they will be keen to get something from this game to boost their survival hopes.

Despite the Magpies’ need to survive, Lawrenson still expects them to lose the game against Mourinho’s top-four chasing side.

He predicts a 2-0 win on the BBC and writes: “Newcastle badly need a lift and a win, but it is hard to see them getting either here. If fans were allowed into grounds then the Toon Army would be laying into the Magpies, and rightly so.

“Tottenham have had their problems recently too, but they were decent in their win over Aston Villa last time out.

“If Son Heung-min is fit then that will be a boost for Spurs, but I still think they will win this one without him.”
