Man Utd Would Like To Rebuild Around Tottenham & England Star

By Joe Fish -

Manchester United have made Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks one of their top summer transfer targets, according to a report in The Mirror.

Tom Hopkinson writes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told friends that he wants to build his midfield around Winks after the club shifts Paul Pogba.

Apparently £40m of the Pogba money is being ringfenced for Winks who fits the profile of midfielder Ole is looking for in terms of age and ability.

Released from the disastrous Winks-Moussa Sissoko double pivot, the 24-year-old has been back to his best in recent weeks, answering questions about how and where he could fit into Jose Mourinho’s team.

Mourinho has lots of work to do to find the best combination and balance in midfield and that might mean Spurs going into the transfer market ourselves to find a quality holding player to knit everything together.

Even so, Winks should still have a big enough part to play at Spurs across several midfield roles for both us and him to resist United’s advances.

I think you’re right re Winks and positioning. With too many changes in mid-field, injuries and changing the game style I’m not sure what Jose’s ideal set up is just yet. But Dier has to go both for his sake and ours.

My one caveat is that I wonder whether he is an effective holding midfielder. It strikes me that he does not have the physicality for that role. I see him more as an Iniesta type player who keeps the play moving, and I feel we would get more out of him if he played further forward.

The “disastrous” pairing of Winks/Sissy that…took us to a CL Final? They were, by far, the most used and effective pairing we had through the CL run.

Winks is going nowhere. You can’t just pop down the shops and pick up a quality, english or “homegrown” or whatever, replacement.

Winks and his family are massive Spurs fans. He’s been at the club since he was 9. Unless the club want to sell him he’s going nowhere.

Nothing to see here….
