One player who appears to have blossomed under Thomas Frank is Lucas Bergvall.

Lucas was named the Premier League’s Player of the Match week for his outstanding performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 win over West Ham on September 13. He scored his first Premier League goal and provided an assist, earning 27% of the fan votes to secure the award.

He was also voted HSBC Player of the Match by Spurs fans for the same game. Now the youngster has collected recognition in the Champions League.

The win marked a successful Champions League debut for Frank, but the performance highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in attack. Spurs’ strong home record in UEFA competitions (unbeaten in 20 games) and Villarreal’s poor record against English sides played to Tottenham’s advantage. However, the narrow victory suggests they’ll need to elevate their game against stronger opponents. The sports card above details Tottenham’s 58% possession and disciplined defending (14 fouls, 4 yellow cards), but their low shot count reflects offensive struggles.

To be honest, Tottenham’s win was more about resilience than flair, capitalising on an early gift and defending stoutly. While the result is a positive start, the performance indicates Frank’s side is still very much a work in progress as they navigate the Champions League’s new league phase.

In five appearances across the Premier League and Champions League, he has contributed one goal and one assist, showcasing his potential as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder. His standout performance came against West Ham on September 13, 2025, where he scored his first Premier League goal and provided an assist in a 3-0 victory, becoming the second-youngest Tottenham player to achieve this feat in a single match.

It’s to his credit that despite Lucas’ season has being hampered by injuries. He suffered a ligament injury in May 2025, missing the latter part of the 2024-25 season, including Tottenham’s Europa League final. Recent reports indicate he’s back to full fitness, with manager Thomas Frank praising his energy and pressing skills. His new contract until 2031 reflects Tottenham’s belief in his long-term potential.
