Looked ‘very nervous’ – Former Spur makes concerning observation

By Mehdi Gokal -

BBC commentator and pundit Chris Waddle has claimed that Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie looked nervous against Manchester United.

Udogie retained his place in the starting lineup after impressing against Brentford. And despite putting in a decent shift against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, Waddle suggested that the former Udinese man looked nervous.

While commentating on the game on BBC 5 Live, Waddle said:

“[Destiny] Udogie’s not had the greatest start to his home career at Tottenham.“

“You know, he played very well at Brentford last week I thought, but today he looks very nervous.”

He might have had a nervous start to the game but it is only natural considering it was his first home game for the new club.

As the match went on, he looked more and more confident and ended up putting in a solid shift.

Ange Postecoglou’s style of play demands his full-backs to play in a more attacking role which tends to then risk making the defense vulnerable but both Porro and Udogie put in admirable performances as Spurs beat United 2-0.

Udogie was one of the seven players Tottenham signed last summer. Fabio Paratici negotiated a £20 million deal for him before loaning him back to Udinese for the rest of the season where the 20-year-old made 33 appearances scoring 3 and assisting four goals.

TBH Says:

Nerves are a natural part of the game, especially for a young player who is playing in front of the home fans for the first time since joining the club.

In fact, it is all the more commendable that despite the nerves, Udogie ended up putting in a solid shift and kept a clean sheet.
