Liverpool’s win over Tottenham marred by controversial tackle: Jota’s honest apology a silver lining

By Mehdi Gokal -

Diogo Jota created headlines when he scored the winner in the 94th winner to win the game for Liverpool just a minute after Richarlison equalised for Spurs.

But Jota could have easily been sent off for his extremely dangerous high foot tackle on Spurs youngster Oliver Skipp which left the midfielder bloodied.

The Portuguese was only shown a yellow card for his offense which became the talking point of the game with fans feeling hard done by the result considering had Jota been sent off, the result could have been different.

And now Jota has come out and admitted that it was a “bad tackle” and has apologised to the midfielder.

Discussing the incident on the Premier League Productions, he said:

“It was not good. Obviously, it’s not my intention to cause any harm to him.

“But unfortunately, it happened. I asked him ‘sorry’, that’s all I could do after that bad tackle but I also think it’s not a red because I touched the ball and there was no intention to cause him any harm.”

Tottenham have now lost 3 out of their last 4 games including defeats to Bournemouth and Newcastle but their last two performances under Ryan Mason have been very encouraging.

In fact, in terms of fighting spirit and attacking play, it has perhaps been two of Tottenham’s best performances this season.

Against Manchester United, they came back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw. In their game against Liverpool, they also demonstrated their resilience by recovering from a three-goal deficit to level the score at 3-3. Although they eventually lost due to a defensive mistake, they were unlucky not to score more as a couple of their attempts hit the woodwork.
