Footballer’s contracts are a murky business.
In the real world, a contract is a legally binding document that is designed to provide a degree of comfort to both parties.
In football a contract is a thinly disguised, blunter instrument designed to provide both side with just enough leverage over the other so everyone can sleep at night.
Christian Eriksen’s unwillingness to sign an extension to his current deal grates and whines through the air like one of those old air raid sirens.
The Dane’s current deal ends on the 30th of June, 2020. For perspective, the 26 year old joined on the 30th of August 2013.
On June 9th of 2015 a further deal was confirmed with Christian rather ominously telling the press, “I feel right at home at Tottenham and I haven’t thought about leaving yet.”
Yet.
When Eriksen signed that extension in 2015, he had 3 years left on his existing deal. Right now, his current deal expires in 18 months.
Quite how an asset that has increased in value becomes less of an urgency to get pinned down, is beyond my understanding.
I’ve heard every Levyologist excuse a thousand times, everyone of them is based upon a different angle of the same fairy tale.
The fairy tale is fragrant, if crackpot dream about hope, faith and a path of righteousness which – via an enjoyable ride – leads to Glory Lite™ in sustainable doses.
In the last blog, I asked why a replacement for Mousa never bought. It appears that the answer was, ‘well it was cheaper and less hassle to squeeze the pips out of the existing man’.
Levys don’t change their spots.
I have heard that Barcelona can be quite a fun town.
Ha! Safety 1st
It IS his mistress. Then I do accept payment on HP…
Hopefully left back. Is that you again levys mistress
Filling the void is the difficult bit.
IF your name is Daniel Levy.
The follicly and vertically challenged one will want a cash surplus out of the deal. Just so he can watch it in his account. And maybe put some actual physical money in his safe so he can say “hello boys, I’ve missed you” to it from time to time…
What position does Cash play? Not sure I want to pay the ticket prices if he’s not up to scratch. Is that you again Mrs Levy?
“Whys the ball round” 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
I might get a blue one and cover it in cockerels for my bike. It could save my face. 🙂
I’m getting a helmet
“Go raiders” 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Go Raiders!!
You more so of course cos you put your professional moniker to it, others were towing party line.
Wouldn’t it be good if you could click on a word and its meaning would come up. Assail” Violent attack. Who says you cant learn stuff on football blogs 🙂 🙂
Down down, deeper and down..
We’ve tried over the years…..nobody can say we haven’t. Most of my exchanges ended with….’you will just have to wait and see’
Well….its time to see, sadly.
You are being very generous using the word strategy!
CE surely worth £80m + ? Not sure how long Coutinho had left on his contract but Barca had a lot of cash at the time so the price was quite inflated.
Liverpool actually do have a strategy and process of replacement though. Not to mention an ownership that wants to win things
THIS.
Alaba and malcon for Eriksson? All day long.
Who cares, he goes missing far too often, if we can get 100+ for him then take it, i’m tired of all of this, i just want Enic gone
Everyone except Kane and maybe Poch and sign me up. Sell sell sell.
If Eriksson WANTS to go id be happy with malcon and cash.
No coincidence that this blog hasn’t been assailed by sanctimonious nut jobs of late.
Even the most affirmed cretins can see where this is heading.
I think we are all in agreement we are not likely to keep him. For me the only thing left is to get as much for him as possible (in this I trust Levy) and to use that money to find an adequate replacement (for this I have no trust in Levy). As said below, our scouting network is rubbish, it has to be the worst in the top flight (either they cant spot talent or not aligned to the business or football needs properly – I mean I could find Messi…but Spurs cant afford him). You look at us and I fee we are still looking for 5 plyers that may improve us, when realistically we should be looking for 1 player that will. We are possibly 18months away from being back to needing 5 players. Currently we need a short term replacement for Kane, long term for Llorente, 2 Central midfielders (depending on fitness of Wanyama), and potentially our full backs are not quite good enough. In 18months if we don’t improve we will need, a new back up Keeper (Gazza will be no1, lloris will be gone), a new back line (fullbacks and CB’s) almost an entire midfield (Ericsen, Dembele, Wanyama, Sissy will be gone or done) and attacking wise we should be OK as Parratt should be old enough and our front line (if they stay) will be a good age.
Have you ever been in a job where your heart is no longer 100% in it-or a relationship for that matter? Barcelona/Real Madrid slowly but surely becoming a realistic prospect for CE who is ambitious and talented. No point resisting. If he wants to go it will be better for everyone concerned for him to leave, thank him for what he gave us and wish him luck. Just make the decision. How to fill the void is a whole other matter.
He’s not interested in going to Barca. His only interest is RM.
Surely, you can’t get football sentiments to take YEARS OFF YOUR LIFE.
“Having said all that, what is Eriksen really worth? Liverpool got a great price for Coutinho and replaced him successfully.”
Comparing us to Liverpool isn’t really fair, they’re primarily a football club.
Why do people assume that he would stay at Spurs no matter how much we offer? It’s not like he has never said he want’s to play in Spain over the years whilst he was at his peak
Players come & go. 6 years for anyone at any workplace is a long time.If he refuses to sign then we have to get the highest transfer fee possible while he is at his peak. Eriksen is good but will he stand out at Madrid ,Barcelona ?
Reactive transfer strategy, not proactive. Levy’s previous lowballing tactics at the final moments of the window do not work anymore. We have no proper scouting team and it’s all on a wing and a prayer. If it wasn’t for David Pleat begging Levy, we would never have bought Alli. The money goes to Levy who is completely overrated and Lewis rather than the team. Having said all that, what is Eriksen really worth? Liverpool got a great price for Coutinho and replaced him successfully.
Hope the U23’s are ready…..cos next year theyl be the only ones here to start.
Even Poch must know after 4 1/2 years that this squad will not get any better, they can’t win anything because the mentality isn’t there.
I’m getting to the point that if selling everyone to pay off the stadium debt also meant Enic would sell up to someone who cared about football and winning stuff i would seriously consider taking it. This slo-mo car crash of negligence is taking years off my life.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a deal is done with Malcolm as part of the package……..
