‘let’s hope…’: Former Spurs star ‘surprised’ with January signing ‘did not expect’ move

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig earlier this week.

The German international striker has joined the Premier League club on a loan deal until the end of the season and Tottenham will have the opportunity to sign him permanently during the summer window.

The north London outfit needed to bring in attacking reinforcements this month and the signing of Werner might have come as a surprise. However, former fan favourite Dimitar Berbatov believes that the German international could prove to be a good addition.

He said (h/t Football London): “I am a bit surprised, to be honest. Did not expect that move. But let’s hope that he is going to take it as a second chance to produce better football than before. Although, depending on who you ask, some Chelsea fans believe that he did well. Maybe someone will say he was not so good. But now he is back and I think he is a good signing, to be honest. I always liked his speed and he can run behind the defenders and get into good goal-scoring positions. The only thing he needs to work on is – he needs to get better in front of goal.”

Tottenham did not replace Harry Kane after he left the club in the summer and they were overly dependent on Son Heung-min for goals. However, the South Korean is now away on international duty for the AFC Asian Cup and they are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements now.

Werner will be expected to step up in the absence of the South Korean and score goals for Tottenham now. Richarlison has not been able to fill the void left by Kane and it remains to be seen whether Werner can deliver.

The German international had an underwhelming spell with Chelsea in the past, and it remains to be seen whether he can hit the ground running in the Premier League this time around. He will be joining a team with an attacking approach and the fans will expect him to perform at a high level under Ange Postecoglou.
