Tottenham’s much-needed squad rebuild looks like it will have to wait for another summer because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The London Evening Standard reported yesterday that Jose Mourinho will be limited to swaps and free agents when the transfer window reopens as Daniel Levy protects the financial stability of the club.
That wish-list of a goalkeeper, centre-half, right-back, left-back, holding midfielder and back-up striker is going to have crosses all over it.
According to The Telegraph, the state of the market has led Spurs to reenergising their attempts to sign Jan Vertonghen to a new contract.
The Belgian’s eight-year stay in North London had looked set to end this summer after he told Play Sports that he had “serious offers” from Europe.
Even in the knowledge that signing a replacement will be difficult, these Spurs fans on Twitter haven’t changed their mind about his future, still believing the 33-year-old’s time is up after a season of dramatic decline.
Facts. Holding on to him for any longer isn’t the right move

C’mon….let him go. A great spur to be sure but there are better, younger options we can get. Thanks for your service Jan….best of luck the rest of the way somewhere else.

I am in complete agreement. Jan has been a great servant to Spurs and still isn’t far off our strongest team. But we need to make changes where possible to bring a freshness to the squad and we have the numbers at centre-back to survive Vertonghen’s departure.
He looks completely shot but is still the club’s only left-footed centre back. Another mess.
I could see Levy trying to tie Jan to an extra year on much reduced terms as it’s his easiest option.I think Jan will tell him to do one and sign for a club that actually wants him,and where he might finally win something.
