LATEST: Tottenham handed ‘dream draw’ in their return to UEFA Champions League – opinion

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham’s Champions League group was confirmed this evening in Istanbul, Turkey, following the draw.

Spurs have returned to European football’s most elite competition for the first time since the 2019/20 season, after Antonio Conte led the club to fourth place at the expense of rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham reached the Champions League final in 2019, only to lose to Liverpool in Madrid, and Conte will be hoping for more memorable European nights in his first full season in charge.

This season, the group stage will be played over nine midweeks to accommodate the World Cup, which begins in late November. As a result, the group stage begins on September 6 and runs until November 2 – a nine-week period rather than the usual twelve.

Tottenham were drawn in a dream Champions League group with Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting Lisbon, and Marseille, avoiding all the big guns. But that’s not to say it will be an easy group as there is no such that as easy in the Champions League.

Frankfurt are the reigning Europa League champions, beating Rangers on penalties in the final. Meanwhile, Sporting were only eliminated from the Champions League by Manchester City last season and could prove to be a tough test. Marseille bowed out of the Europa League in the group stage.

Comparing Spurs’ group with the other English teams’, Spurs fans will be delighted with their upcoming opponents.

Either a subtly understated sense of irony or a glaringly over-estimated (by himself) sense of intelligence!

Name a harder group then ours to solidify your argument… You can’t..
Our group is the easiest for sure…. Well done to Frankfurt and co, but these clubs are easier than coming up against the big guns like Madrid, Barca, PSG, Bayern, City etc..

Really happy with this draw. I’ll finally be able to watch the two teams I support playing one another. Hoping for a couple of exciting 4-4 draws, but dreading two boring nillers, as both teams seem happier on the counter. An early goal for either side could get things going, though. Nevertheless, Sporting lost their midfield duo and Tottenham have Kane & Son, so the latter have an advantage, and should that early goal be Tottenham’s, Sporting could be in for a serious hammering. Anyway, hope both teams make it through and we get to watch 180 mins of quality football.

I can confirm that the mood in Lisbon is one of cautious optimism.

I doubt any of those games will be easy ..and we will need tactical nous to qualify maybe a plan b ..just like our opponents ..
Anyone who believes we have been convincing is eating too much tripe.

I note the games are being crammed in over 9 weeks..same for everyone I suppose but Conte does like time to get his message over..All teams in this group can give us a game..just hope we can change tactics if the need arises.

Tough luck for Inter. Cheatski have been handing brown envelopes under the UEFA table again I see. We should win this group. Time to build some momentum and confidence again

Spurs, as Harry repeatedly tells us, are poor. They will not qualify from this group and do not deserve to while they continue to sign losers like Richarlison and has-beens like Perisic. Anyone who thinks differently is a happy clapper.

We’d have been better off with Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Bill Rodgers, and Shirley Williams that is for sure

We’d take them wouldn’t we? Don’t know if I want this Paqueta lad just so West Ham don’t get him. He is a much better dribbler than Maddison, but players coming from Ligue 1 haven’t fitted well in to our team.

I woudnt call our group that easy. Sure it could of been a lot harder but:
a) Frankfurt were Europa winners, we couldnt even get out of the groups of a 3rd tier competition
b) Lisbon are a good footballing team albeit limited
c) Marseille is one hell of a hostile ground

I guess this will show how good we actually are or not.

I’m guessing Richarlison will now be starting the home games against Fulham and Leicester then…….

Happy days.. There is no easy group in the CL. But our group is definitely the least difficult..

They said that about Dynamo Zagreb….dream draw until the gang of four threw it away.

At least this should give us an edge in the league. Less fatigue.

At least we are back in the territory of knowing where these cities, even countries are. Over the last 2 seasons I have been googling teams and cities like Danny Rose used to do with players!

A great draw that should allow us to progress. We just need Levy and Paratici to bring in 2 really good players now. We need a CB for sure and a midfielder who can do more than sit and defend.

Hopefully the weak draw doesn’t confuse the team into playing like we’re in the Europa – we tend to do best as plucky underdogs in the CL

Shame to miss out on a top top team to play home and away in the group stages, all the more reason to get through and not fall into the tinpot. Conte will prioritise the league.
