Latest report names the world-class full-back Antonio Conte wanted to sign in the summer – the club signed Spence instead

According the latest report from The Athletic, Antonio Conte did not want to sign Clement Lenglet.

The Barcelona defender joined Spurs in the summer on loan which was seen as a stop-gap signing after the club failed to sign any of their top choice centre-backs.

The Athletic states that the Italian manager did not want to sign Clement Lenglet, who joined Spurs on loan from Barcelona last summer as a stop-gap signing after the club failed to secure any of their top choice centre-backs.

Conte was said to have wanted a top-quality left-sided centre-back, like Alessandro Bastoni, and a world-class right wing-back, such as Achraf Hakimi.

However, the club ended up with Lenglet and Djed Spence instead, much to the frustration of the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

This aligns with what Football Insider reported about Conte’s extraordinary press conference being triggered by the club’s refusal to his request of signing Romelu Lukaku and Stefan De Vrij in the summer.

The report claimed that while Conte demanded proven world class players with a winners mentality, the club’s focus was on signing young players with potential who can develop with Spurs.

Conte has a reputation of being a serial winner and has won a trophy with every club he has managed. He is someone who delivers instant results but with top class players and clearly Spurs owners do not have the same level of ambition.

If reports are to be believed, he is now set to be sacked by the club after his outburst and Ryan Mason will be taking charge as interim manager until the end of the season.

Thomas Tuchel was one of the managers linked with the job but he is now set to take the Bayern job after Julian Nagelsmann was surprisingly sacked yesterday.

Other candidates include former manager Mauricio Pochettino, Sporting boss Ruben Amorim and former Barca man Luis Enrique.
