Tottenham correspondent for Football London, Rob Guest, says the Lilywhites should target finishing inside the top four this season to show they are making progress.
Spurs finished last season inside the European Conference League spots and have been playing in the maiden edition of the competition this season.
Tottenham had started that campaign hoping to earn a return to the top four. They even flirted with winning the league before the season unravelled and their form dipped.
They will try to secure a return to the Champions League again after this campaign and Guest believes that should be a realistic goal for them.
It remains to be seen if they will eventually finish inside the top four, but Guest insists they have to show progress from the last campaign and at least make the Europa League spot.
He was asked about Spurs’ realistic goals for this season in a Football London Q/A session, and he said: “They’ve got to be pushing for a top-four finish this season given what’s happened over the past two years. Whether that’s possible come May remains to be seen but there’s got to be some progression if they are to get back on track.
“At the very least they need to be back in the Europa League next term rather than the Europa Conference League. Good runs in the cup competitions are also a must if they are to eventually end their trophy drought.”
Spurs have had an inconsistent season, but they are finding some rhythm.
If they continue to improve, there is no real reason why they cannot at least challenge for the Champions League places.
I agree he’s doing well with what he has inherited. Here’s to a massive transfer window to really push on. 😂😂😂😂 no chance under Levy!
Jonathan Woodgate knows.
I’m actually liking Nunos set ups now, he’s doing the best with what he’s got.. Apart from Lo no show, he went with my set up against the toon and we got the results. NES is no fool he knows the players a lot better now.. And yeah we should play all our young kids in that euro con league. Gives them playing time and experience.. All key first teamers stay at home, unless anyone needs game time under their belt for fitness.
At least Nuno is leaving our better players behind which I hope is prioritizing a league finish over that nonsense. Hope he fully goes for the domestic cups though as it’s the start of the winning mentality we all want to see.
Likeliest finish? Seventh? I think we’re a long way short of being a Top Four side.
Yes, the EL is for also rans and now we have the Conference!
This is great to know. 🤔
EL used to be the booby prize now with the Mickey Mouse it is seen as a step up.
Happy Days
Whats a trophy?
Insightful stuff as always from Bruce Grove.
Someone says, nonsense.
Top 4 is a bridge too far. The defence is not strong enough, neither is our midfield and our bench is weak.
If we had shown significantly more v Palace and Arsenal I might think a challenge was possible, but we fell way short to warrant a top 4 finish. 5th at best, expecting 6/7th.
Agreed
He’s making a career out that nonsense.
Alasdair Gold .any chance he would just fcuk off..From what I’m hearing he says.Club sourses tell me ,I’m hearing from the training ground ..Just pls stop ..pls
Not good enough for top 4. There’s an argument the squad is 5th place quality but there are problems with mentality and cohesiveness, as evidenced by those three abysmal performances against Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal. Other performances have shown there is quality there, but with West Ham players all playing together as a unit EVERY game and United surely eventually improving, 5th place is the absolute highest we can finish.
Unlikely without major recruitment by Steptoe which is even more unlikely. Honestly a couple of wins again Villa and Newcastle and people go bonkers! First we need to get back into the Ropey.
We have no chance of top 4 without a recruitment miracle in January the likes we have never seen under Levy. So no chance.
Yes, a good run in the cup competitions is generally important if you want to win a trophy 🙄
