According to journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is likely snub summer signing Djed Spence this season.
The Lilywhites signed the 22-year-old in the summer, with talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook even calling him the ‘perfect player’ for Conte despite the Italian claiming that ‘it was was not a signing he wanted to make’.
And in the first six Premier League games of 2022/23, the Englishman has played just one minute of top-flight action, with the manager heavily favouring Emerson Royal for the right wing-back position.
And Dean Jones believes that Spence could be at the end of a Conte snub. He told GIVEMESPORT:
“I’d say the most disappointing signing might be Spence because I just don’t see him figuring.
“There was a pretty big build up to his arrival, but he has only played one minute so far, and Spurs even looked into signing an additional player in his position as the clock ticked down.”
The 22-year-old was one of Nottingham Forest’s best players during his time at the City Ground, playing a key role in the club’s promotion to the top flight, starting 41 games.
However, there is plenty of time for Spence to prove his worth for Conte keeping in view a couple of hectic months are coming with the Champions League group stage starting this week. If Conte decides to give the youngster a run of games, he will have to seize on the opportunity.
You have to earn your place in the team under Conte…not like previous managers👍
Yeah i agree throw him in the Carabo and see how he handles it ,if he impresses at defending and gets to bomb down the wings and crosses well who knows .
He is tall and looks like he can put it about i personally at least would like to see him test his metal.
Bit harsh on the boy, he needs time. He will inevitably need a loan out as Conte will trust Royal and Doherty over him, he’ll probably get some game time in the League Cup etc, that will be his chance to impress.
Levy has been trying to do the Bale/Modders thing again for nearly a decade now and it hasn’t happened, not even once. He’d rather spend money on three punts rather than an older player with less resale and a higher salary. The risk is relatively low, as you buy young and most of the fee will be achievement based and whatever you paid out will be recouped once they’re sold even if they make it or not.
Where he really overstretched himself was on Tangy, Hitchen was in charge of scouting and his lack of due diligence and Levy’s willingness to trust him meant we bought an exceptional talent with no in depth knowledge of the player’s attitude. I believe that Levy expected Poch to do what he’d done with other young players like Dele who’s attitude might have been a bit off at times. Therefore he and Hitchen dismissed any concerns about that sort of stuff and went ahead. All about the bottom line and nothing to do with football…
Buying Spence as a future prospect is an awful risk. Bale and Walker were a resounding success, but there are far too many to mention that have been flops. Even if we have made £130ish million profit on Bale and Walker how much have we wasted on other random future punts that include Reguilon, Clark and Rodon. Collectively, these 3 alone could have bought one very good player for us. I’d rather spend £45m on one player than spread it thinly on 3.
How many minutes has Doherty played this season? Is he not in the plans too?
I’d like to apply for one of these pundit positions where you don’t have to know anything about anything. Perfect for me.
Let’s hope Spence gets the same leeway.
Haha … now to be fair to Emerson Royal he genuinely had another good game. That boy has some engine when it comes to getting up and down the pitch and even his footwork/offensive skills seem to be improving.
Lol…let’s talk about Royal…he is really good until he makes a mistake
then you musn’t mention the mistake..
He could hardly be described as a journalist with that ‘take’ … more like an amateur clairvoyant! Clearly it’s beyond asinine to proclaim Spence the “most disappointing signing” on the back of one minute of EPL action.
