Tottenham are reportedly considering Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso as a potential signing for next summer, aiming to strengthen their squad for the long term.
The 23-year-old American has been drawing attention with his impressive displays in La Liga, positioning himself as an exciting prospect for Spurs.
According to journalist Josh Hughes, Cardoso is linked to a deal involving Giovani Lo Celso, with Tottenham holding a £21 million buy option for the midfielder.
He highlighted the defensive midfielder’s dominance both in the air and on the ball, describing him as a player to watch closely in the coming seasons.
Speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast on YouTube, Hughes said:
“Johnny Cardoso, the Betis and USA player. He’s 23 years old and Spurs have a clause to buy him for £21m as a part of their deal for Giovani Lo Celso. Everyone I know who watches La Liga says he’s an impressive player and he’s one to watch. He’s dominant in the air and on the ball.
“With that deal we have for £21m, I think that is one to watch. Not in January, but he’s one we absolutely could sign in the summer.”
Cardoso, born in New Jersey to Brazilian parents, moved to Brazil as a child and honed his skills at clubs like Avaí, Criciúma, and Internacional. He made his professional debut with Internacional in 2019 before transferring to Real Betis in December 2023, signing a five-year contract.
Since joining Betis, he has developed into a reliable figure in midfield, blending technical ability with physical presence.
This season, Cardoso has made 17 appearances across all competitions for Betis, contributing one assist.
