Joining Tottenham a ‘priority’ for 27-yr-old star, clubs in ‘negotiations over final fee’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to wrap up the signing of David Raya from Brentford this summer.

The 27-year-old has established himself as a reliable Premier League goalkeeper and he has been identified as a replacement for club legend Hugo Lloris

According to Fabrizio Romano, joining Tottenham is now a ‘priority’ for the Spanish goalkeeper and the two clubs are currently in ‘negotiations over final fee’.

Apparently, Brentford are holding out for £40 million. But Tottenham do not plan to pay that kind of money for him. Raya is in the final year of his contract and he will be a free agent next summer Brentford are clearly under pressure to cash in on the player and they will not want to lose him on a free transfer. Spurs are hoping to leverage his contract situation and sign him for a knockdown price.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can succeed in bringing down the asking price in the coming days

Raya would be a quality signing for the North London club and he would be an upgrade on Lloris right now. The 36-year-old Frenchman is clearly past his peak and he needs to be replaced soon. He could still be an important squad player because of his leadership qualities and experience, but he is no longer good enough to start for a team hoping to challenge for major trophies.

Meanwhile, Raya has shown his qualities at Brentford and he will be hoping to take the next step in his career and join a club with more ambition.

Spurs could provide him with the platform to showcase his qualities at a higher level and he will hope to challenge for trophies in the coming seasons with the North London club.
