Tottenham’s season has inevitably sparked conversations about the form and future of several key players, with James Maddison finding himself at the centre of attention.
The attacking midfielder, who has enjoyed a strong goal-scoring campaign, surprisingly doesn’t seem to have a guaranteed spot in Ange Postecoglou’s starting lineup.
James Maddison left unsettled at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou
According to John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose, Maddison has reportedly felt unsettled due to the Australian manager’s frequent reshuffling of Spurs’ midfield trio.
Wenham suggested that this constant rotation has made it difficult for the Englishman to establish a rhythm and fully cement his place in the side. The pundit emphasised that Maddison’s contributions this season have been outstanding, pointing out that the midfielder has scored more Premier League goals than many strikers.
Despite this, Maddison has yet to feel truly secure under Postecoglou’s management, which Wenham believes is impacting both his confidence and consistency.
Speaking to Tottenham News, the club insider commented:
“Maddison’s numbers this season have actually been really good.
“For an attacking midfielder, he has scored more goals in the Premier League than most clubs’ strikers have this season. Therefore, for Maddison to score on his return, with all the recent criticism, I was delighted for him.
“I feel he is always deserving of a starting spot. However, Postecoglou seems to change his midfield every week, which means Maddison has never really been settled during Postecoglou’s entire tenure.
“It does feel to me like the midfield changes all the time. However, Spurs’ strongest midfield should always include Maddison.”

Since his arrival from Leicester City in June 2023 for a reported £40 million, Maddison made an immediate impression, earning the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for August after notching a goal and two assists in his first three league appearances.
After missing a few months with an ankle injury sustained in November, the 28-year-old returned to action in early 2024. But rather than stepping straight back into a fixed role, he’s faced the challenge of adapting to Postecoglou’s tactical demands.
However this season, Maddison has been Tottenham’s most prolific goal scorer in the Premier League, with 10 goals and 6 assists across 32 appearances in all competitions.
Beyond the stats, his creativity and ability to unlock defences have been crucial, ranking him among the league’s top performers in key attacking metrics.
As Spurs push for a strong finish, giving Maddison the stability and trust he needs could prove vital in reigniting their attacking firepower.
