John Barnes’ Words Of Wisdom On The Harry Kane Rumours Are Off Beam [opinion]

By The Boy -

Despite Harry Kane being only a few years into a six-year contract, the rumour mill has already begun linking the Englishman with moves out London. The main driver, of course, is the absence of trophies in an otherwise decent career at Tottenham.

Former Liverpool and England ace John Barnes – ably assisted by a betting company’s agenda – has wandered into the debate and via The Sun newspaper advised Harry Kane not to walk away from Spurs.

Curiously, Barnes references the former Manchester United ace Bryan Robson as an example of the merits of sticking with the side you support.

“Very similar with Bryan Robson at Manchester United. United and England captain at the time, whilst United were not doing well, he could have easily left.

Except this isn’t a particularly accurate account of Robson’s career at Old Trafford. Where ‘Captain Marvel’ won a shedload of honours and became a household name in English football.

  • Premier League: 1992–93, 1993–94
  • FA Cup: 1982–83, 1984–85, 1989–90
  • FA Charity Shield: 1983, 1993
  • European Cup Winners’ Cup: 1990–91

Equally, Barnes’ kind sentiments ignore the fundamental differences between the business models at Manchester United then, and Tottenham now. Alex Ferguson built a dynasty of footballing achievement, whereas Daniel Levy is building a soul harvesting device that boasts the longest bar and the largest retail space of any European club.

Who knows what Harry Kane will decide to do, but if it’s silverwear he’s after, and he’s planning to stay at Spurs, he better get himself down to Asprey in Bond Street.

We’ve all got Wenger to thank for the idea that getting top four was somehow the same as winning a trophy. He pushed this mantra for years as if it was a measure of success for the club. But like ENIC all Kronckie wanted was the extra revenue from getting into the CL.Fcuk the club.
Forget the medals, finishing fourth is the new title. In fact why do they even still call it the Champions League?

All players want the same things. Firstly, to be paid the going rate for their talents and secondly, to win something during their career. Player recruitment at Spurs might initially be aided by the stadium and the training facilities but they realise after a while, that the owners of the club’s aspirations are merely of a monetary nature. They are happy to achieve a top four finish and to compete in the CL but that is the height of their ambitions. Whenever there has been a chance to turn a good team into a great one by recruiting the right personnel, Levy has balked at the moment of decision and has always bought cheaper options. Can anybody blame the likes of Berbatov, Carrick, Modric, Bale and Walker for wanting to join clubs which actually want to win silverware. Why should Kane be any different?
